So, what exactly does a yachtmaster do?
Found a ladies' Yachtmaster, and thought about getting it for my wife. She already has a nice SS black face DD, which she really likes (and matches up to my SS Submariner nicely).
I showed her the YM, and she DOES like it. But, she asked "so, exactly WHAT does that watch do?" I'm guessing it is a bit more waterproof than her DD, and the bezel probably rotates. Is that it? I guess this is the price to pay for marrying a woman that is both smarter AND more practical than myself! Lee |

It tells time...and date!
If she takes up yachting, she will need one less piece of equipment :-) And, it looks so darn good! I am sure that someone can give the technical specs for it, I have mine and my wifes and the closest we will be to yachting may be a luxury cruise! lol Honestly, like most Rolex "tool" watches, the majority are likely never used for what they are "made" for - I have been snorkling with my Sub :-) If she likes it and you guys can afford it... that shold be enough. I wouldn't fight her if she doesn't want it, that's more Rolex money for your wrist. Good luck. -Pete

"But, she asked "so, exactly WHAT does that watch do?"
It tells the time quite nicely. The original YM is essentially a blinged up Sub with a lesser depth rating.

Any idea on the actual depth rating on these? Not that she would ever scuba dive with it, but she WILL ask me! Thanks for the help guys, Lee |

The YM is rated to 100m which means 125-130, same as a DJ.
The bezel rotates both ways and does so so that when you are waiting for the start of a race you can quickly rotate it for the 10 minute gun - without having to go all the way around if you miss the spot. The second hand is red for quick glance readability during the last 60 seconds - cuz if you cross the starting line even one second early in a race you are screwed.

It does what it's supposed to do, tell time.

I would look for a full size YM, that way you can share it!

Function
"Rolex’s Yacht-Master II Chronograph is the first regatta chronograph where the duration of the countdown can be programmed. This is because there is no standardization of countdown for boat races around the world.
If the countdown on the Yacht-Master II is started late, pushing the reset pusher will cause the minute countdown hand to leap to the nearest minute before. If the countdown is started early, the minute countdown hand will be repositioned to the minute after. This function allows boat captains to instantly synchronize their watches with the race’s official countdown." Referenced from here: http://www.rolexforum.nl/topic.php?i...nglepost=21845 |
