I don't think so, it's just that the dial has some patina to it.

Today one went at VRF for $3500, with a lot less patina.

I time these watches with patina will become sought after. Off all modern Rolex sport watches (after Zenith Daytona) the Tritium White Explorer2 is produced in lower quantities than all others.

The rare one is the 16550 'cream' dial Explorer 2, not many of them about, unfortunately quite a few fakes around as well, these tend to sell for a lot of money but rarely come up.

Steve mullholland has/had an authentic one for sale recently .The slight difference is the L placement,that is the tell. I read they use lights to accomplish the "fake patina" look .

Yes,

The 16550 is more rare.

But...., have you EVER seen a snow white silver plot 16550 with rail dial (alligned SCOC) ?
That would be rare.

Though white 16570 tritium with nice patina will become sought after.
