Autopsy on a Lady President

The wife's 18k DateJust started winding funny. It was very stiff, and I could feel the occilator slinging around when manually winding it. If you laid down on the dresser, it would only run about half as long as it should. It's 20 years old, seldom worn, and has never been opened up. I took it to Jim Roebuck in Topeka, KS. and he called with his findings today. It's dry, and badly needs cleaned & lubed. It needs all the seals & O-rings replaced, and a new mainspring. It is "set". That is, the spring has developed a memory from being left wound or unwound to a certain degree for long periods of time. It also needs cleaned up & polished. Jim used to be a Rolex repair center, so knows how to completely recondition the watch, and can get the genuine parts. He's done literally hundreds of them over the years. He's also installing a replacement diamond dial we bought several years ago. Should be good a new when he's done.

It should be around $580. Parts & labor. Probably wouldn't be any more at a RSC, or AD, but I've had Roebuck work on watches since back in the 70's and he does it right. I first got aquainted with him when I started working on the Railroad. He was the local time inspector for Santa Fe Railroad at Topeka. And, he has a friendly, positive attitude when you walk into the store and talk to him, rather than just plain "attitude"
