I'm looking for a Rolex for a graduation present for myself and I found a late 1980's ss Datejust at a local pawn shop. I have been testing the time (I wind it and check it once a day at the store) and it is running about -40 seconds a day slow. It is a good price (approx. 1200.00) and if it needs to be serviced do you think it is worth the price?

Any help would be appreciated.

That's way too slow David...enough to make me think that there might be something wrong with it....like needing an overhaul service. That could run you $400-$600. For $1,600-$1,800, if the rest of the watch is in good shape, legitimate and little to no bracelet stretch...I would say that's not over paying. Not a steal either. Can you post some pics?

1,200 is GBP Sterling I'm guessing.
40 seconds a day is way out and so it does need professional attention.
Maybe do a search on ebay and see what comparable watches have sold. This should give you an indication on price.
Otherwise if you can post some photos then we can maybe give you some more relevant information

Things like overall condition of the case and bracelet are also relevant.

It does sound about right(A smidge high) for it's age,but!!
How many manual winds to start and is it being worn or left on the side table??

Thanks for the replies everyone!!!!!

I have been winding it 40 times. It is in the display case face up during the day and at night it is in the safe. The shop has had it for a year so I don't know if it has run at all in that time. The shop closed on wed. and sun. so I cant wind it then. I checked it this morning and it was only one second off for the past 24 hours??? I think i will continue to test it and wait. The watch is in good (not excellent) shape overall and the bracelet seems to be in the same condition.

the $1200 is American.
I'll try go in with my camera early in the week when I recheck cereal # and get them to open the back up.
