I too was faced with a "DO I REALLY NEED 2 WATCHES?" I said that when I bought my Omega SMP Bond which was my first grail watch. I now don't even try to rationalize my watch buying. If I pay my bills and don't have to rob,cheat, or hurt anyone else to support the Swiss monkey on my back it's all good!

If you enjoy having a watch that is hard to get, maybe Rolex isnt the brand for it? there are other brands that might be rarer, do you like anything else or do you want to stick to Rolex?

What's wrong with having 2 Rolexes?

That way, when you clean one over the sink, there's another on your wrist so your date won't think you're weird.

Paul, I'm totally in agreement with those who are encouraging you to KEEP the Daytona. I know you love it and you worked so hard for it. I can't imagine you're REALLY ready to say goodbye to it....

Go ahead and get the GMT II if you can afford it. Obviously buying preowned helps (not that there are many left at ADs brand new). It's one you've talked about for ages

I think these two will REALLY compliment one another and I bet you will wear them BOTH!!!

Trust me - I have a very hard time justifying the three I have now so I do understand.....but each time I think about selling one, I have no idea which I could let go...

I was in the same situation a month ago and being a practical kind of person, I gave my other watch to my step father as a "thank you" for teaching me to be a man about bought the Sub I had been wanting for 6 months. I am a one watch guy I guess.

Seriously though, I share the same shallowness as you - I was on a waiting list for 5 years to buy a S/S Daytona from an AD at MRSP (the alternative was to pay a 30% premium to cut the queue) but now that I've worn it for the past 3 years, I find myself thinking of trading it in or swapping it for something else.

Some alternatives I've been offered - a YG blue Sub, a YG Daytona or a YG GMT IIc. All are now my new grails...

I'm finding that I would have far more use for a GMT or Explorer II than a Sea-Dweller. For Sea-Dweller money I can trade down for a nice holes-case Explorer II plus and an Omega 2254 or something. Or I can trade up for a IIc.

Problem is, the SD is just a classic.

If you really are just a 1 watch kind of guy then sell the Daytona now and go straight to the GMTIIC.

You've got the grail and scratched that 'itch'. Re the vanity thing, if discussing watches you can always say you once had a Daytona, and have now prioritised more practical considerations.

Years back a Sub was a grail, then a Sub Date - they've both gone, but I still have my GMT, which preceeded them by some years.

we all feel differently about our watches.

My daytona was my daily wearer for 5 yrs, maybe because it was the only rolex i had at the time among other high end pieces.
Since I got mt sd last nov and the gmtIIC in feb I haven't worn the daytona at all, perhaps i've lost interest in it, but i'll keep it just to see how i feel about it later.

Your case maybe different as you haven't lost interest in yours, rather as you said you are a one watch guy. Best thing to do is get the gmt and see how you get along.

If you should want to sell the daytona...go ahead. I know several guys that realised keeping theirs was just an ego thing and now enjoying other watches just as much. Hey if in a yrs time my daytona's not getting any wrist time..I'll let it go to a new home..it's just a watch.

I am in the exact same situation as you. Running a global service organization with management teams in 8 different time zones, 3 of which are overseas, and 1 that is GMT.

GMT II Coke is the "go to"

Paul, you already know youre gong to get the GMT - so the questions as I see them are:
(a) if you can comfortably afford the GMT as a cash buy - then buy it and live with both for 6 months - see how guilty or impractical (or not) you feel having a very expensive Daytona sitting in a drawer for weeks at a time - once there - that will make your decision easier to keep or sell the Daytona

(b) if you cant comfortably afford the GMT in addition to the Daytona - buy the GMT and flip the Daytona - you should have $4,000+ left over to buy something else or put into a stock fund!!!
