Chinese Tourbillon
Hey guys
Just curious if anyone owns a Chinese Tourbillon adn what they think of them. I consider myself loyal to Rolex, But I always wants a tourbillon and will never be able to afford a great one so I figured I would settle. Thanks for the heads up :) |

But the tourbillon does not correct position variations, it only prevents them being detected in the usual testing conditions. But when placed on say a vibrograph, the tourbillon reveals its weaknesses immediately.IMO the admiration given to the tourbillon is of the same nature as that given to a very clever magician.Who for instance makes a large object disappear its just a optical illusion, and looks good at the time. The tourbillon does not correct anything,in wrist movements, it only prevents the detection of an error that still exists in natural gravity with wrist movement. The tourbillon is in fact an additional mechanism that consumes energy without producing anything except much misinformation. The energy it consumes is taken from the reserve destined to the watches regulator. As a result, the balance with less energy will have reduced advantages. Now I agree totally the skill needed to make the cage plus tourbillon etc is a great horological skill. But in reality the watch is no more accurate that several other non tourbillon chronometer watches. And even todays modern watches, with or without tourbillons are not so accurate as one produced almost 300 years ago.Gravity is one of the main causes of rate variations in watches. By creating the tourbillon, when Breguet thought he was eliminating its effects. It looks like it was an big error on his part,he only masked them like tourbillons do.Now if someone could come up and counteract the effect on gravity on a wrist watch, now that would be a big break though. But until then tourbillon IMO are just good to look at,and they are very expensive, and they make them because they can.But again looking at the other side of the coin,in Breguets day when he invented the tourbillon and the tools he had then. Now today with modern machines and computers puts a different perspective on the making side of tourbillons today.

Great information!! The China tourbillon (Seagull brand) just promise +/-15 sec a day in most case, which is worse than the normal automatic watch. To my understanding it is just a "visual Gimmik" to be a little reward for people who spend ALOT $$ to buy a watch. Just like you buy a Deepsea you can get over 10,000ft diving level which is another Gimmik for the $ you spent. Zenith have the 3D tourbillon as well which sell over US$100K, do they very accurate? I don't think so, it just another deluxy Gimmik product. For people who like this kind of Gimmik, Chinese Tourbillon give them a chance to own a real flying tourbillon, is it cheap? not really since it close to US$1K, but compare with swiss tourbillon, it is extremely inexpansive and all of us can afford.

Seagull had stoped to sell their movement (basically they sold ALOT of the ST8000 flying tourbillon movement int the past) to other watch assembly factory so to can control the quantity of their flying tourbillon in the market in order to keep the pricing. So now the price of Seagull watches should be much higher than 4 years ago when you bought it. I have a friend working in Seagull Hong Kong as well, he can offer extra discount for the Seagull brand watches, which has exactly same warranty as you buy from the AD. Feel free to let me know if you are interested as well...Also I deal with another factory that assembly watches with Seagull flying tourbillon, which is same quality of Seagull watch and cheaper prices as well
