My first Humming bird photo

Even though it's been 30 degrees here the last 3 nights in a row, this little guy tells me it's still Spring. He just got in from Mexico.

That's a great shot! I love how you've used depth of field to your advantage.

Great pic, Allan. It's a reminder to my wife and me to put up our hummingbird feeder.

I was using a Canon Power Shot digital. I'm unsure about the lens but I can check tonight when I get home. The camera is at least 4 years old so it's not the latest and greatest for sure

I took about 30 shots over a one hour period while I waited for him to come back and feed so I'm a little unsure which setting took this one. I kept trying different settings but what seemed to bring it into focus the fastest was putting the camera on the "Foliage" setting.

Thanks Everyone. He's a little ruffled up...I guess from the long migration. He took several long rests on the feeder.

Allan, you can carefully tell your beloved she is full of

It is definitely a Hummer. It looks like it may be a male Black-chinned Hummingbird which is primarily found out west but also less frequently in the south.

He kind of looks like a Rufous. I am not a bird expert but he has a similar fluffy head.

He looks tasty! Let him plumpen up on the sugar water, and your looking at a mini turkey dinner one night!

Just kidding!

Every time I see one, it amazes me. Something as small as a grass hopper, and weighs as much as 5 pennies is flying around, and making nest. Thats a really cool bird!

These are on the other end of the spectrum, and are awesome to see in the wild. The pilleated woodpecker is HUGE, and sounds like a jack hammer on a tree. I saw one today, and it was giant. Do you have these near your home?

Yes we do...those birds sound just like you say Paul...a jackhammer that echoes through the woods. They also show up at the feeder and excavate through everything to find the one morsel that they want!

It's hard to believe that something so tiny can fly all the way across the Gulf of Mexico to migrate. When I used to work offshore, sometimes I would see a stray bird land on the rig looking for fresh water and to take a break. I used to leave bowls of water outside for them to drink. It was pretty cool.
