For those following the 16 year old girl sailing

Around the world alone in a 40 ft racing boat....I think thats the dumbest thing Ive heard all year...now that are giving out her lat long location I would be worried that pirates would be heading for her for ransom since her parents are well off.
Some parent should never be allowed to have kids....now they put at risk other lives to send out rescue boats and ships to get her....
I hope her parents have to pay for it.
I really hope the poor girl makes it out alive and learns a lesson from this.

I think the current conditions are too harsh for those vultures...gale winds and 30 foot seas.

Way too political right now....the important thing is her being rescued....that is all....

Discuss the other issues post that if you don't mind.

Thanks

I don't see how pointing out that her parents are collossally foolish and irresponsible is political in any way.

And I too hope the girl is rescued and her parents learn from this though I suspect it will go right over their heads.

This has just happened off the west Australian coast...all people care about right now is discussing the rights and wrongs of the parents....I am sure they're feeling pretty devastated....and are just praying their child is returned safely.

What I am suggesting is a little compassion for them....and that we wait for the fate of the girl to be determined before we continue to make value judgements here.

When Casey Stoner started motorcycle racing as a kid....and he can die at every turn...I am sure his parents faced the same dilemma.....now he is a former world motogp champion....were his parents irresponsible....tell me?

My son went to school with someone who moto crossed professionally. This year he died and he was only 21-23. He made a mistake on a jump and that was it, his family is crushed however he was doing what he loved to do and that was ride a MC since he was very young.

I raced motocross and flat track when I was 15-18 and now I can hardly walk because of it.....I think my parents were trying to kill me off

So Greg...I guess the point here is...were they irresponsible to let you do something that was in your heart at such a young age?

I would hate to see my son want to take on a sport that would risk his life...it would be a huge dilemma for me...and I don't know which way I'd go right now....

It's always living with the consequences....these girls parents are facing this right now....and I heard her dad talk yesterday and my heart went out to him. All he wants is his girl back, alive and safe. Her brother did it at 17.... It's in this family...she grew up around it...

And heck...we don't have statues of cynics...we do of explorers

Understand...I could easily let rip on irresponsibility here....but there are too many other issues to consider IMHO....

Yes they were....if I had had kids there would be no way I would let them near a motorcycle....or as the nurse in E.R. calls them "donorcycles"

I agree with Greg. Young people engage in sports all the time and risk harm and that's pretty much ok under supervision but to send your children onto the worlds oceans at a young age, ALONE is vain and irresponsible. It's almost as if they feel more strongly about their childs Guiness record than about the kids lives.
BTW I feel the same way about the 13 year old kid's family (who call themselves a "team") that climbed Mt. Everest. Glad they made it ok.

Pirates won't bother her as pirates are lazy. Getting to her would require too much effort.

My only thought here is this young woman is alive and well!!!!!!

Now for the debate.......I understand both sides!!!But let's move to a drivers licence......
Here in North America,16 is the age of the permit!!! Isn't that just as dangerous???
More young lives are lost on the road than anything else...Fact!! But,it's the right of pasage to adulthood....
I'm not standing beside the parents of this young girl, but we need to look closely at our own lives closely!!!
Just saying.......

Driving is a risk....but its one most everybody has to take if you live in the U.S. just to get to a job and back.
Sailing around the world alone in small boat at 16 serves no purpose ...except for the record.
I would not risk my childs life just so she has a chance at a record....they will be broke sooner or later by another dumb parent who lets there kid take of in boat.

I hear you Greg...I used to race motorcycles...and loved riding them...but when my wife became pregnant I stopped altogether.....

It felt irresponsible to risk my life when I had this added responsibility....

But...I may ride them again...although I won't race...and maybe my son will be influenced...and I may face him wanting one.......I was very happy when doing this...me on the track:...pure bliss

My dad asked that I not ride motorcycles when I was 17... And said he'd buy me a car if I promised not to start till I was at least 25.... I shook and agreed....perhaps this saved my life ...who knows...I still broke enough bones and had enough crashes on the track to get close!

Having said ALL this....I am glad the parents of Casey Stoner and many others were prepared to live with the consequences...otherwise we would be without these types of people. And I love motogp....love it!!!!!,!!

Who knows where this young girls life will take her because of this profound experience....but she is extraordinary.

Greg,I agree with you....Trust me....
Parents do what THEY think are best!! Some good, some bad..

This girl at 16 has(legally)made her choice to do this..Parents or not,I hope she is well and lives to tell her tale....We humans are forever going to do this type of risk taking,no matter how old.....My fingers are crossed for this person, her and her alone!

I consciously joined the military when i was 17... been fighting wars every since. My parents really had no significant influence in my decision and I do not regret it one bit. I think this 16 year old girl has made a decision and her parents defiantely support it. Is it dangerous? sure... so is walking across the street. Just my view on this...
