I think this site is one of the most unique resources even before the ink has dried after signing the Rolex certificate. Almost everyone has the ability to go to an AD or place that sells rolex to feel and see if it makes you smile. Why flip?

More than being just a good question, Mikey.....I think that's also a very valid one!!

Being one of the primarily guilty ones in the "flipping" department, I guess it all boils down to ULTIMATE satisfaction.

Problem is we are never FULLY satisfed as far as Rolex is concerned....or for that matter even other brands. I myself am on Rolex #18 (the Blue Sub) and have gone through innumerable OMEGAs, Longines, TAGs and other good Swiss watches before deciding....Come on, JJ...ROLEX ONLY!!

Temptation is another contributing factor. Rolex suddenly comes up with a GEM like the new Anniversary GMT-II with all the new "bells and whistles" added on and we are all tempted one way or another.

So some of us decide....time to flip....so we can cash in on the new GMT-II....and this can go on and on.

But I think the real culprit is this forum with its superb pics and great members.....each one vying for top honours and one tempting the other with words and pictures.....a source of perpetual instigation!!

There you go....and that's why we flip and flip and flip.....

Well first must say I was a bit of a flipper in my early Rolex days but as you get older and wiser, to making a lot of mistakes.

I don't flip. I have never flipped a watch. Not to say it won't ever happen through some unforeseen circumstance. I just don't think so.

Why flip? That's an excellent question. Let me give you an example. My friend just bought a GMT-MASTER II Red/Blue bezel, at the time he made his choice, he was absolutely convinced he liked it the most. After 3 weeks of ownership, we went back to the AD for some browsing, this time after trying on a SS Sub, he noticed the crown on the Sub was more to his liking than the smaller GMT. Now he wants the Sub also! Flip Flip Flip.

It is like those people who go from one 5 star resort to another, checking them all out. There are a lot of Rollies. I just cannot buy into the idea that I am meant to try more than 3 or 4. I know that I have a DJ in my, and maybe even a gold one some day. But if not, I can live with my 2 took watches and my Omega.

It's an overall mentality of loving the chase, I suppose.
People do it with a variety of different things....jobs, cars, money, girfriends/boyfriends, WATCHES...
It's the thrill of having something you want...OVER and OVER.

I would flip under the circumstances:
1.If I bought a watch before shopping around enough(like it wasn't exactly what I wanted but got it anyway) Pressure in a few ways can get you to jump the gun on a purchase whether it is a good deal, a great knoledgealble sales person, or a pushy spouse.
2.If Rolex made a new watch which I would wanted greatly. I would consider flipping mine. Like a TT DD DJ on a jubilee. (something that isn't made by rolex)
3. I want a new Rolex available but can't afford enough capitol to own more than one.
4. My taste in a watch may change. Think diamonds; it works for me now but might be less tasteful to me in 5 years. I may not like DJ's and move on to a sports watch.
5. I might afford something nicer and eliminate the need for the old one. If I upgraded to a president model I may now longer want a DJ since they are similar in size.

to me money plays a big factor- if i had loads i wouldnt bother flipping, i would just buy buy buy! but in orderto finance my next watch i i have to look at what is not going to get a lot of wristime- recently i got the panerai and fell in love, i knew i had never felt like this about a watch(or even a woman!)before, so the omega was not going to do it self any justice gathering dust- i need a tough watch for work but the seiko does the job and i dont care if i knock it here or there, and i can get(hopefully) over a grand for the omega, ut only 100 for the seiko... and i already have my weekend watch(114) my dress watch(rolex DJ) so i flip(or try) the planet ocean after only 2 and a half months!

as i say, for me its money as i love the planet ocean but cant justify it as a work watch nor a £1200 second weekend watch...

Humm.... I not sure I've ever "flipped" a watch in the sense I understand the term--buy to sell quickly to make a buck. I have sold a few over the years, usually to replace what I had with a better example.
As a collector one is always looking for the 10/10 watch. I view it more as an "upgrade" if you will on the quality of the pieces I have.

Also, I think over time our goals and likes change. I've had some pretty nice pieces over the years, some fit nicely into my collecting goals some were moved to make room for ones that more closely matched the direction I wanted my collection to go.

I have sold only one.Its my GMT II red/black that I traded for the Blue TT Sub.I wore the GMT for nearly 6 years.I wanted a Blue TT Sub and the GMT served as part payment for the Blue.Got a less 25% on the Blue,new and AD AND a great price for the GMT.This combination of factors led to the deal,otherwise I would have kept the GMT.

The Dweller I got at less 28%,new and AD.Thats why I went for it.My second and more rugged Rolex.

Flipping a Rolex is OK,BUT ... only if bought "low" and if sold "high".

I guess thats what also ads to the allure of Rolex,is thats it keeps its value.How much of this value you keep,is much up to yourself.It MUST be bought low and if sold, it must be sold high,otherwise the exercise becomes futile.
