Well, the site encourages new members to post, so here's my post! Not much to say except it's a very nice site and very informative. It's nice to have a place to see how people discuss their watches and how they identify with them, treat them, fix them, praise them and damn them all in one place! Being a newcomer, I'll be a bit of a social observer, but there's no question in my mind that Rolex ownership is concerned with much more than watches.

Yep. I have to say that the extent of emotional energy that goes into watches of all sorts has always intrigued me and not always in a positive way. Sure enough (and I hate to go all philosophical) the world is increasing filling with disposable stuff of low quality, and good watches are a very portable and personal way of addressing the imbalance. That's a personal theory, mind you, but I'm beginning to understand why people value their good timepieces.

Thanks everyone. I feel most welcome and I'm enjoying exploring the site. I live in Townsville, which you might know is in the Tropics of North Queensland, on the East Coast. Great town on the sea, although some find it an acquired taste. I just ordered my first Rolex and am expecting it tomorrow or Friday. It's a black face Sub Date, new and I'm excited about it. I dive (the Barrier Reef is off the Coast where I live) and although I have some other watches for diving, this will be my daily wear and I'll dive with it. We don't have a dealer here, so I had to research while travelling and reading what you guys have had to say, and I'm satisfied that the Date Sub is a great place to start. The 3135 Movement seems like a serious workhorse, and it looks good enough to wear to work. Again, I have to confess, I'm really looking forward to getting my new watch.

Welcome Peter!
Enjoyed reading your post... I have to agree with you about the proliferation of disposable goods. While I feel that rolexs are overpriced, I at least feel that there is an element of good old fashioned love, hand labor and pride involved in their manufacture. I can't bring myself to spend much on a quartz watch (despite their accuracy). Besides, I hate the idea that I may be somewhere sometime and have a battery go and not have one available. I purchased a new 16610 sub yesterday! You will love it! Good Luck!

Welcome to TRF Peter I think you'll love your Sub Date. I know I love mine. I've worn it 95% of the time for 6-1/2 yrs and it hasn't missed a beat

Again, thanks all you who posted welcomes. Sadly, my pool is as wet as the watch has been since arriving on Monday but there is an old wreck just off the coast called the Yongala, and I have a dive booked there. It's a fairly weather-fickle site, but I'll try to snap the new Sub next to some appropriately wreck-ish bit of the boat's remnants. What I'll probably end up with is reflected flash, fuzz, plankton blur and a very small fish if I'm lucky. Then I figure, you all know what the watch looks like or you wouldn't be here, so I'll try to demonstrate the lamest possible depiction of it underwater if my skills are true to form. I really like the watch; I was a little embarassed to see how excited I was when it arrived since it had to be delivered (No ADs in TSV!).
As watchnut notes, there is an element to Rolexes (and doubtless other fine watches) of craftsmanship that makes ownership more enjoyable. As for Rolexes being overpriced, that's easy. Rolex watches are, from an economically rational standpoint, among the most ridiculously overpriced things you can buy including sex and bottled water (in no particular order). But if you ever see a true economic rationalist buying a Rolex, take a picture because it's a rare event. It seems to me that Rolex has, for whatever reason you acknowledge, managed to make something that is desirable, beautiful, functional and durable. What price is that these days? Answer: whatever you'll pay, because you're buying something in addition to the watch and no-one can measure it except by appreciation. In some minds, this makes Rolex the object of derision, and Rolex buyers objects of scorn. So be it. From time to time, the things we apreciate escape valuation, and that's a good thing. I reckon this is a fabulous watch, and I am enjoying it. Where are you in Qld, Urs? |

Welcome to TRF, Peter. Enjoy your activities here, even if they do wind up being mostly observation! I'm betting you will be joining in a lot!!
