A $6800falsie was found today....
I was putzing around on my lunch break an hour ago and damned if I should have had my camera.
A local watch dealer had a gorgeous TT Blue Sub. I took a few minutes to inspect it up and down, listening to the salesman tell me how great of a watch, accurate, durable, blazi blazi blazi. I ask if it's genuine, and he swears up and down that it is. Guess he didn't think I'd notice the etched coronet on the crystal had 6 points on it instead of the 5 it should have had. |

There's a nice thread that deals with this if you look a bit further down the forums. Since about 2002, Rolex has been phasing in a laser-etched coronet (their logo) at 6 o'clock on the saphire crystal. It's a bit tricky to see and almost impossible without some sort of magnification. Fakes now have them but they're usually sloppy. Six points is really sloppy, but I guess it's the thought that counts. Check out the thread, there's nice pictures and some tips for finding it.

Don't discount the (unlikely) possibility that ONLY the sapphire crystal itself is an off-brand item, and that the rest of the watch is actually authentic. In any event, the watch would not be original, and certainly not totally authentic Rolex. The only really fail-safe method of verifying the authenticity of the watch is for an AD RSC to examine it thoroughly.

Just to add to this, if for whatever reason the glass has to be replaced, the new genuine glass will have an "S" horizontially in the elipse in the base of the "crown"/"coronet". This is to signify it has been replaced, the "S" stands for service. The coronets without the "S" are only used in the factory in the production line. Actually the coronet is etched in the glass after it has been fitted to the watch, it`s done by laser, I saw it demonstrated the last time I was in Geneva.

It would be interesting to see what is the case with the watch Chimpy is discussing. I suspect that if the watch itself is authentic, then it is possible that the crystal has been replaced with a third-party poor relative of the genuine article. Or...the entire watch is a fake! Either way, it is not a totally authentic Rolex.

Who do I bring this information to to have him busted? I'm hardly thinking of standing outside his booth with a sign that informs the public of his trade secrets.

I am a nasty guy in those situations. I would probably have smiled and started to cross examine him in front of his clients. I can get into a mean zone. But he deserves it if he really knows that it is a fake. He is committing fraud, and false advertising and theft. So once he was exposed as a fraud in front of his customers, I would report him to the Rolex master narc squad wherever they are.

The guy is a thief. Plain and simple...and a scumbag. I say that though only if he really knows it is a fake. If he runs a watch shop he shoud know. No excuses. However he really has not committed a crime until the watch is actually sold. Then the buyer becomes the victim and you have a crime. Just possesing the watch (even for sale) is not something that most police departments have time to deal with.
No complainant, no crime is how most Police Agencies operate. Budget cuts and staffing issues. Its not going to be a priority to them unless it is made one by someone who got ripped off. Even then I could see them refering the victim to civil court saying that it is a civil matter and not a criminal one. |
