Hi, all.

I'm definitely new to these forums, and pretty new to Rolex in general. I find myself in the position of wanting to buy a really nice watch that I can wear until I eventually give it to my son (and, hopefully, one day he to his), and have been vacillating between Rolex and Breitling. After a lot of careful consideration, and discussions with friends "in the know" and who have each of their own, I have chosen Rolex. I prefer the heavier watches (i.e. the ones that I know I am wearing, even without looking), and the larger (40+) faces. As such, I have been gravitating towards the Deep Sea, Cosmograph Daytona, the Submariner (in that order). I wish I could say price is no object, but it is. As such, I think the Cosmograph Daytona is out of reach today.

I'd love some recommendations, and look forward to spending even more time than I already have in perusing the previous posts and getting to know you all.

Welcome Brent! I would say visit an AD and try them all on. I don't think you can go wrong with a Sub. The DSSD is a massive watch that will leave no doubt that you have it on your wrist.

Rolex is the way to go...as other brands are great as well But don't hold value like the Rolex does...
Sub is a great watch to start...

Welcome aboard! I am still a Rolex rookie myself, however, that was my first thought in buying one the thought of passing it down to my future children. I went with a simple datejust, that way my first child can use it as a motivating factor to try and achieve whatever dreams they would have. Maybe they may purchase a minute repeater watch before I do (I'll save for a future thread). Anyway great choice and welcome again... All the best... FYI - JustRolexes (Tony G) is a standup guy he is an awesome and reliable source of info as with the other legends here...

Welcome, I could make suggestions but I think you will find far more valuable information by looking at the threads on this website. There is a wealth of information to properly arm you and give a flying start.

I think if your're going to go for something to pass through the ages you should go for a timeless classic which would be enjoyed through the generations... Has to be the submariner.

A classis 16610 (or 116610) would fit the bill. Or you could opt for a TT which dresses up the piece further.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't found Joe Escobar, but will definitely give him a call. I was looking at JG, as it's right on my way home from work in Santa Clara. Hi Brent!

If you're willing to buy pre-owned and only considering a face-to-face transaction, you might want to consider Jacek Kozubeck (Jacek on TRF) and Alex Maniscalco (Alex Collector here). Jacek and his partner Scott Kaplan have a brick and mortar in SFO. Alex is based in the Walnut Creek Area.

I have to warn you. All three guys are passionate about watches, and are the biggest enablers I've ever met.

If you're thinking of visiting an AD, Joe Escobar Diamonds would be the way to go IMHO. Very friendly folks. I've only been to Jade once. It wasn't bad.
