New Z series SS GMT II-Photos included

After several months of research and checking for best prices, I went ahead and got a SS GMT, with the Pepsi bezel. Since I got the Sea Dweller, I've worn it to the exclusion of all my other watches. I figured I would get another Rolex someday, and as I did my research, I was advised that Rolex Canada is due for a price hike. Not wanting to make a decision and wait, only to get zinged with an additional 7%-10%, I moved my plans ahead and moved on a SS GMT II.

I had considered the Explorer II, but the GMT II can track 3 time zones to the Explorer's 2, and the bezel inserts for the GMT II can be readily changed to go from blue and red to black and burgundy to all black. I went with the Pepsi, since its the original colour issued to the Pan Am pilots for whom the watch was initially designed. I had also looked at the red and blue and the black and burgundy in person, and off the top preferred the red and blue. Its unusual to see so much colour on a sports Rolex, which is also compelling. I like the idea that if I want to change the look by having a differnt coloured bezel put in, I can and for minimal cost.

I also looked at the Sub LV, a beautiful watch, but I have the Sea Dweller, both of which share the same movement. I wanted to have a more different watch than that, so I went with the GMT II. I very much like the Anniversary GMT, but the cost is almost double, and..............

The GMT II wears differently than my Dweller; in the photos, you'll see the differences in thickness and construction. Obviously, the GMT II is lighter and has a thinner profile. It also has the smaller twinlock crown than the Sea Dweller and other diving (and the Anniversary GMT) Rolex watches that use the triplock crown.

Overall, a very sleek, comfortable piece with some interesting functionality. I was never that keen on the cycplos, but I must admit it does have its advantages for those of us with the ageing eyes.

The GMT II also has a difference "face" than the Sea Dweller, since the two are very differently constructed. I find at a glance, the GMT II is a bit easier to read, and appears larger, though I never have any problems with reading the Sea Dweller.

The two will be worn in rotation, they are different watches, but both have pedigrees in commercial useage which I find reassuring and of interest.

I received advice and info from forum members, special thanks to forum member "Kris" for the help.

Thanks for reading,

Chris

Great pictures - if it is Ok with you I wouldn't mind using one of these as my avtar. I have just been down the same decision making road myself. I have owned an SD for the last five years but have always aspired to own a GMT. After two years watching prices and trying on a few different models (1675/16700/16750 etc) I decided on a K series 16710 with pepsi bezel. Like you I regard the pepsi bezel as the classic GMT look. The watch had a few marks on the case and bracelet but the price included a visit to the RSC and the watch came with all extras (box, papers, bezel protector etc). The watch is still with RSC but hopefuly it should be back soon. Hope that we both enjoy our new SD/GMT II combinations.

That's a real beauty. The pepsi bezel looks great. Love to add a red/blue bezel if I can find one.
Enjoy,
dP

Once I'm doing the thread, I click on the add files icon, and in the window that comes up, I browse and get the file I want.

Congrats, Chris.....that's a great watch.

You will find the GMT-II wearing much lower and slimmer than the SD. There is a whopping difference of almost 3 mm in height between the two watches, the SD being almost 15 mm in thickness as against the GMT's 12 mm.

Wear it in good health!!

The prices on the TT models have not really gone up here that much so it is still within reach. However..............
I am just waiting to see if my AD gets in the TT 50th GMT.....sorry to the Bluey subby guys, but the TT GMT(old and new) IMO is the best.

Congrats, Chris and Woody. Great acquisitions. And welcome to the 4 hand club.

Trust me, you will love the GMTs. They'll probably become the main watches in your rotation. You'll find yourself wearing the GMT almost to the exclusion of anything else.

Do you ever change your bezel insert? If so, is it a fairly simple matter or something that should be done by a RSC?

I am strictly a one bezel insert person. IMO black is beautiful. The others are just too busy.

Well, I'm sticking with the one that came with my GMT:

The only other one that I think would work with the Rootbeer GMT is the all-brown one that was standard on earlier models. I may try that one day, but this one is fine!
