From the seller's reputation, it seems not to be a fake, but does anyone know why a jeweller without Rolex accreditation would bugger up a perfectly good watch like this? Seriously, is there a market for quirkily stuffed-up genuine watches. Am I being too charitable? The question is serious though.

PS Love the "Don't confuse this with a two-tone Sub" I nearly wet myself.

Sheesh! Can't you read? It clearly says (and I quote WITH CAPS LOCK ON) :-

WE HAD OUR ROLEX CERTIFIED WATCH TECH INSTALL THE DIAL HANDS AND INSERT AND POLISH THE CENTER LINKS THRU THE BAND LEAVING THE OUTSIDE IN MATT FINISH AND THE SIDES POLISHED!

Now if that description of the work doesn't make it crystal clear what went on and how, then I don't know what more can be said. They polished the centre links through the band, for heaven's sake. They don't say which band: it could have been U2, Cold Play or Green Day, but somehow they got the musos involved, and they all got polishing. Perhaps on the tour bus between gigs; it's hard to say. Lot of downtime in the music business.

But to suggest they just swapped bracelets? I mean, really...

I get it now...

Basically, they threw the hands, dial, and bezel insert on a SS sub, polished the center links, and are trying to sell it at a premium.

It sure is a lucky dip, no doubt about that. I'm still genuinely curious to know why this goes on. Any clues? I mean, assuming they're not fakes and I think they're not, what is the point? Why would you want to go to all that trouble to de-value a watch, and are there buyers for this stuff? It seems other-worldly, or do I just not get it?

The box does not match the "D" or "Z" series boxes. Also the 16713 is wore off the back hologram! Hmmm!

I don't know what would Rolex say about a watch like that....

It's a real SS watch, but with a real TT dial and bezel....

So what is the status of this watch, Real or not Real ??? (Real SS Case + Real TT Dial + Real TT Bezel + Modified Real SS Bracelet)..... :))

Regards,

The non authorised shops here in Singapore are full of them, every kind of blinged up bracelet, dials, bezels and so on are available, I have seen a couple where the gems are worth more than the watch. Think about it this way just like you don't want to turn up at the golf club in your Enzo to find another one the same parked accross the way so you ship out to some tuning company to tart it up a bit a Rolex will be no different for some.

rolex usa would service it / but it'd cost a fresh set of hands, face and insert... over the cost of a service

- I agree here. People do not like to have the same thing as everybody else. Look at all the modified cars/trucks out there, solely because they want something different. This is how I am with cars, but I won't even touch this watch!

I guess you're right, and thanks for the insight. In Singapore, I'd have to stay away from the non-AD because I'd be petrified by the possibility that under all that bling would be at best an ETA movement in a fake.

Your point about not wanting to have the same as everyone else is taken, but I don't see that being the same as what's going on here. The watch in your post is special; as you say, not everyone's thing but sure special. This funny Sub isn't an obviously special anything. It's kind of like a donkey.

I'm not sure the rationale of differentiating your watch holds in this case. Only Rolex-heads would know it was "different" and in this sense, it's different in same way an enormous mole or unfortunate squint is different.

I bought my LV from a non AD here in Singapore, there is no problem if you are carefull, I bought from one of the bigger non AD who has several shops and made it clear I wasn't a passing tourist but staying town for a couple of months. I have no doubt that they would soon get a bad name if they were found to be selling fakes. If you are in any doubt the ROLEX service center is just up the road on Orchard so it isn't as risky as you first might think.
