Took the plunge

A while back I was browsing this forum deciding which Rolex to get, I have been a continual lurker looking (lusting) at some of the fine Rolex watches some of you guys have. At the time I wanted a bomb proof timepiece that was very accurate, mainly for work so I went with an Omega Seamaster Quartz. I know quartz movements are generally frowned upon in these parts but I wanted something really nice I could pick up and not worry about it loosing or gaining time and me missing flights when traveling for work. Apart from that I did not want to travel with a Rolex attracting unwanted attention to me, the Omega is enough of a magnet.

Satisfied with my Omega over the last year I have still had that itch to get myself a nice dress watch. I felt the Omega while a lovely timepiece was like like wearing boots with a suit when out on a black tie night or with a suit. Many will disagree but it is how I felt so I drew up a shortlist and returned to this forum for more research.

I could not stretch to a day-date but on a recent short vacation to Jersey which is a low tax area compared to the UK (Jersey has 3% sales tax), I picked up a date just. I wanted a white face with batons and the coronation bracelet. They did not have it in stock, instead they had one with a grey face with numbers but another with the correct face but wrong bracelet. They called and tried to get one from Rolex inside the week I was there but it was going to arrive after I left.

The salesman assured me that this was not a problem and I returned two days later and they had taken the dial from the other watch and used it on the one that I wanted with the grey face and the coronation bracelet. As you can see from the picture it has the roulette wheel which I am not sure I would have got if they had the model I wanted in stock but I love it. so I guess they will work hard for a sale when needed. All papers and international warranty's tags are there and they are a certified AD (I checked on the net in a coffee shop beforehand).

Anyway I wanted to say thanks to everyone, although I have not contributed I have found very little need to ask questions because you have built up such a great repository of information that I felt confident about pricing, dealing with AD's, what you can expect and how much you can aim for. Thanks one and all; your posts and discussions have been immensely helpful in making my choice and feeling that it was the right one. Not for one second have I thought "Should I have done that" or "Should I have got the other one"

Anyway enough babbling, thanks again and here is a gratitous picture because I know how much you guys like to look at watches even if you have seen a hundred of them before

Cheers.
