Ad called me on the first 39mm Explorer...
Today I was contacted by my AD asking if I wanted the first 39mm Explorer landing in this city. He already had the serial number of the watch - ending in 888. I like 8's however I passed on taking this watch. I own an EXP1 & EXPII (both V's) and just can not get past the short hour and minute hands - knowing that they lengthened the second hand and not the other two - could have been sooo great....I have read posts on this subject before...and am simply wondering if the consensus is that most of the Rolex community feel the same way..? That Rolex perhaps goofed on this new model with the smaller series watches stubby hands..?

Did you see it in person, up close?

I was watching a video from the Rolex site yesterday regarding the 39mm Explorer and frankly, the hands look minuscule, not just short.
I know that sometimes a watch that only looks so-so in pictures and whatnot can look great in person, but proportion is proportion and there were shots of the watch from nearly every angle. I can't wait to see one, but I don't expect to be surprised. I will admit that I might at some point have the watch grow on me as so many things do, but in this case, I think the Explorer might be in the same league as the Pontiac Aztec.

I understand....
That Aztec was a complete horror show - sorry to read the comparison. I have not seen it in person - although I did receive a very nice invitation...
I am hoping that next years EXPII+.. will be a hit and add that to my collection. Like we have read - proportion is proportion... Thanks for the comments gents... |

More importantly, what was chief designer smoking that day when he/she approved the design for production?

Thought it looked fine after seeing one in the for sale threads.

I admit that that was a somewhat hyperbolic comparison, but I'm thinking that we "old schoolers" will need some serious time to get used to it, if we ever do.
I have to remind myself, however, that I now own a watch that has a bracelet that I used to hate, a dial that I thought looked idiotic, and a bezel that was ridiculously bulbous. Not only do I like it, but I paid what for me is a small fortune for it. Taste and fashion are weird.
