I have always put a small piece of clear tape on the flip lock first link. It stops the clasp from marking the link. Covering the whole clasp is a great idea. Trust me when I say that you will be the only one who will notice it.

Aren't you worried that the plastic cover might scratch ? Better put another layer over that. Oh, but that could scratch too...
