Experiences with AD cleaning?

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone had experienced any problems with AD cleaning a watch? I am thinking of selling my GMTIIc and wanted to make sure it was in top shape before doing so, but don't want to take any unnecessary risks. Thanks.

I've always had great experiences when getting my watches serviced by an RSC. Given the cost of servicing and polishing I wouldn't be so quick to spend the money unless the watch is in bad shape. On the other hand you get a warranty from the RSC which is valuable to some buyers.

Some have skills, some don't - in a nutshell.

Best way to clean it is soapy water and a soft toothbrush.

How old is your watch? Some like the patina of a well-used watch, cleaning may not always be the best bet for the best price.

Welcome to TRF!

Most AD's will steam clean it for you. Comes out nice. I've never had a problem with that.

Thanks for the welcome, Numismatist!

The watch was purchased new from the AD about a year and a half ago. The AD offered to steam clean the watch for free, I don't think it's worth it to pay what they asked to polish it.

Numismatist - thanks for welcome! Just to clarify - AD said they would steam clean for free. They said it would cost $250 for polishing, that doesn't seem worth it.

Follow-up

Just to follow-up - I took the watch to the AD and they tried to charge me $35 to steam clean it, but when I mentioned I had bought it there, they did it for free. I was please with the results - definitely got all of the dust from between the crevices. See below for pics.

Looking good there Nick. I always ask my AD to do some light cleaning for me when I drop by. But if I needed some proper and thorough cleaning, I will ask the RSC to do it for me..

You said you were thinking of selling it so if it still has small scratches you could use a Capecod cloth and some tape. Give it a light polish on the shinny parts and you are good to go. But from the pics it looks good.
