Ultimate watch collections
Hi all, I have recently acquired my second rolex, a gmt2c, so guess I'm a collector now. I was wondering what you guys would class as an ultimate collection of watches would be?
Should it be a good mix of new and vintage? Examples of each iconic watch? Single brand etc, etc. Please post pictures |

When I think "collector" I think the person is attempting to acquire "rare" pieces that not any rich Joe can get. With that said I have to believe a true collector must have some vitage pieces in their collection because of the knowledge, research and networking you need to get an authentic well condition timepiece.

IMHO a collector is just that, a guy who appreciates and has (or is planning to have) more than what is needed to tell time.
However, an awesome collection for me would be one that is focused. An all Sub family like Mike Wood's or our own Mike's GMT line-up provide an appreciation of what happens when a WIS devotes watch space to a specific line.

Thanks guys appreciate your thoughts. How do you feel about adding a non rolex to your collection? I'm looking to add a chronograph to my collection and decided Im not that keen on the daytona driven by both looks and cost so have decided on a speedy pro which also has a cult following.
Anyway look forward to your thoughts |

Hey Nick,
The term "collector" can mean different things. Some will view a tightly focused gathering of watches centering on one function and brand as a collections of "divers" or "chronographs" showing the evolution of the reference. Others might take a different approach and concentrate of references with a particular history--COMEX divers for example. Still others will focus on very rare pieces reguardless of brand. There are even those that look speciffically for birth year examples no matter the brand. In the end, large or small, any collection reflects what the owner desires to get out the hobby. My own humble effort has traditionally centered around Rolex "Divers and Fliers" as these were the watches I grew up with. These were the watches to which so much of my history is tied (and I'm the original owner of a few) and will always hold a special place to me. As I got into Panerai I decided I wanted a little broader collection, one incorporating the various functions yet centering around the luminor style. I don't know a "collection" is ever complete as we are always striving and learning about these wonderfull little things and the history they represent. |

A lot has come and gone over the years as I've tried to define and re-define what I want out of the hobby, but a few of them will always stay. |

Quantity, Quality, Function. Everyone puts a "collection" together differently. I've had/have numerous brands with numerous functions. I've flipped a lot of watches and sold some I shouldnt have but i've decided on a "Theme" to my collection; A rolex from each metal available, and Worldtime/GMT watches from numerous watchmakers.

I don't even know if I would call my watches a collection, however I enjoy everyone of my watches so for me it works just fine.
So if you want a speedy to be the next one in your collection I say it is your money, you have to live with it, so add it to your collection. I not only like Mike's collection I like his definition of a collection. The part especially where he says that the owner defines what a collection means based on what they desire to get out of it. I aslo think the Mickey collection is pretty neat as well.

My collection was pretty consistent, I initially focused on GMT's & Sub's only, but I have sold and bought a few here and there, so I would say that I am in transition! I am at the point where I a decreasing quantity, but increasing quality....which is tough.

This would be a good start, the complete line of vintage divers, with gilt dials from the 60s and matte dials from the 70s.
One of every sports model, with a proper mix of new and vintage, would also be a respectable collection.

I want one of every sports model. I appreciate the value and rarity of vintages, but prefer to have newbees!
