That would be a tough choice for me, Steve. The DD is a stunner (but then I love my YG diamond dial DD).

But I am probably the ultimate fan of complicated watches. So the PP tugs at me for that reason. But then I already have the same functions as the PP on my Breitling Olympus, plus it's got a chrono function.

So I'm not sure which one I would go for. I would probably save the DD for dressier occasions. Which means I might opt for the PP since I would probably wear that one more.

Tough decision. You can't go wrong either way as they are both BEAUTIFUL watches. I guess I'd go with the Patek, just because it is different. Although the platinum DD is simply stunning, the PP has that something about it

If I could afford either of these watches, I'd have my damn man-servant change the day/date for me!

I don't owe any PP, I can tell PP is beautiful. However, I don't like complications, it costs too much to fix it in case it breaks. So, I would go for the Plat DD as it is most recognized brand in the world. After all, we want the bling-bling. I bought a Plat DD with roman numerals two months ago.

My honest opinion is that the Patek Philippe is the classier watch. Rolex make superb timepieces, but I do not personally care for dials with diamonds for indices. It is difficult to compare the two shown in the photo as they are so different.

If it were cars, it might be like comparing a Maserati with a Porsche. The M is exclusively for a niche market whereas the P is a dream car for many.

I read that Patek owners usually don't have to worry about money too much whereas Rolex cater for all people by clever marketing and the existence of forums like this one.

Patek by a wide margin.

Rolex is to watches what Mercedes is to cars. Patek is like a Rolls Royce.

Edit: Actually, if you could afford either one you could afford both. So Get both...

It's great to have a beautiful timepiece that just looks an ordinary watch. The ultimate wolf in sheeps clothing! Go for the PP.

Each to their own, I respect that, BUT bottom of the barrel! Now that's hilarious.

The PP 5146 is one of the most complicated watches out there! Much more complicated than ANY current Rolex. You can buy a $200 Seiko that has a day-date function! For what it does, the Rolex DD is very overpriced.

The 5146 is so sophisticated that the date DOES NOT need to be changed for any month (not even February) unless it's a leap year. The watch calculates the day, date, month and moon phase.

Compared to a $30k-50k Rolex that needs to be adjusted 6 times per year.

John.
lol, silly me. I had the perpetual moonphase/chronograph in mind when I made that comment. not that I have gave it much thought when I replied but instinctively I went and compare the plat DD with the plat 5004.

nevermind the bottom of the barrel part

IMO...neither of them would get my

money out of my pocket. Everything they say about Rolex is true about Patek...its over priced. Everything they say about Patek is true about Rolex...it is very well made.

The only new Rolex I like is the 18k DateJust on a strap. It will have the sophistication and elegance of the best dress watches, and the strength of an anvil. And with the money you'll have left over, you can buy a nice vintage Patek Calatrava...and then see if the love affair lasts.

For my taste, nothing beats an 18k yg Rolex on a strap.

and then...just to say you did it...

Cheers John
You've been around a long time, and so I respect your opinion a lot.
Interesting to read your post about Rolex & Patek. For me those extra dollars would be more worthwhile on a second Rolex or even a JLC than a Patek. I don't disrespect Patek, it's just a value judgment in terms of bang for the buck as far as I am concerned.

You will find a Patek 5146 will hold its value quite a lot more than the Plat DD.

Agree, but I would compare the Patek to a Bentley rather than a RR.

I think we drove that point home. It's been a good thread, no harm done. Good to see opinions of other watches apart from our beloved Rolex.
