Value of my watch?
I don't know if this is allowed but I was hoping to get some insight from the pros.
I inherited an X serial two-tone Datejust with champagne tapestry dial from my father. It comes with all boxes, papers (which are open and undated), tags, polishing cloth, and service papers from 2006. What would y'all value that at for sale and trade? Thanks for your help! Chris |

Kinda sounds like you are hunting for bids.

This is the only pic I have right now...
And no, I'm not "hunting for bids" Just trying to see what the actual experts would say my watch is worth. I don't even know if I want to sell or trade it, just curious. |

Nice watch...from someone that has kept his fathers (and grandfathers) watch, I would recommend you do the same. Not sure if it has any sentimental value yet...by I guarentee you, someday it will...Never give or trade away a fathers watch...never...(IMHO)

Love the tapestry dial. Btw, is this watch a 16233? If yes, they're typically found from $3000 to $4000. Here's an illustrative chart of eBay sales for that very reference I prepared for another thread awhile back (yes, a chart, ahem):

Regardless of the price...I've decided to keep it and work on trading my SD for a GMTIIc (SS)...
I would like to thank all the guys on here for virtually slapping me back into sanity. Sometimes we younger folk (age 23) forget what matters. Thanks again, all! Chris Shank |

A "buy it now" price has little relationship to actual sales, except it usually represents a watch that has been unsold for a long time. Since I looked at 16233 eBay offerings for a long time, I would say $2.5K to $3K depending on age, from a recognized dealer. I would also agree with the $2K price from a private seller.

I would guess $3,000, based on the condition. I've got my father's 1950's TOG and wouldn't sell or trade for anything.

$2k. There are plenty of 20+ year old TT DJ's to choose from out there. I agree w/everyone else, keep it.

I'd say the watch would be worth on the market, somewhere between $2200-2800. You're SD is probably worth double... You'll need to bridge the gap between the SD and GMTIIC (SS), the watch in question combined with your SD should get you a new GMTIIC or a lightly used late model with $1000.00 in pocket... |

Thanks, Paul -- those were the prices for asking prices whether sold or not, listings closed as of the date on that chart (9/23/2010). Clearly that criteria pushes the high side, but it does at least provide a snapshot of the average asking price of $3464.74.
Just for fun just now I looked at 18k/SS Rolex 16233 watches that sold (eBay.com, completed sales only as of tonight, 11/30/2010, both Buy It Now and regular auctions, with stated shipping prices added in where shipping was not free). The average selling price was about 17% below average asking at $2883.29. Randy |
