Bought a pen and some inks and have a few new questions...
Hi Everyone!
I was shopping for the SO when some sort of inexplicable tractor beam brought me into the Montblanc boutique on Madison Ave. I bought a pen Ive wanted for some time. I got the 149 with a fine nib. Its a wonderful pen, although I wish it was a little bit heavier. I also bought some new inks from Noodler's. Up until now, my only experience has been with MB inks. While I do like them, I wanted a truly permanent ink that also wasnt going to harm the piston mechanism in my pen. I inked up the new MB with Noodler's bad black moccasin. The ink looks great, but is it possible that it flows faster than MB ink? I always seem to have a bit of the ink pool up around the tip of the nib. To verify, I added the same ink to my other fountain pen which also had the ink pool up but not as much. Is having the ink there a problem? Do I need to take back my 149 to have the nib adjusted. Is this all normal and best ignored? Thanks in advance for the answers. Cheers, Chris I dont have any good pics, I'll shoot some better ones tomorrow, but I do have this one of the nib that shows the pooling Im talking about. Even if I whip the nib clean, it comes back after half a sentence of writing... |

Do you have any MB ink you could try it with? I don't know if there is that much difference in the viscosity between MB and Noodlers. I would not think so. I have not noticed any big difference.
Beautiful nib. I look forward to some more photos. Congratulations Chris on a great pen.

Hi Chris,
If I'm reading your post correctly, you're saying that ink is pooling on the nib on the opposite side to the feed. This is a common condition called "Nib Creep". It's caused by surface tension and microscopic imperfections in the nib. It does not and should not affect how a pen writes, how a pen fills or how a pen empties. It should be of no concern to you at all. From what I understand, Noodler's inks can cause nib-creep more than other inks, which may be why you're experiencing it. If you desire not to have nib creep, then I suggest washing the pen thoroughly and emptying all the ink, and trying a different brand (Parker or Montblanc or Sheaffer, for example), although there's no guarantee that the nib creep will stop. By the way, the MB149 is a fine pen. I wish you many happy scribblings with it. |

Some Noodlers inks are considered very "fast" and will creep.
Try some Noodlers Bulletproof Black or really any of their Bulletproof inks will be permanent and should not creep as badly if at all due to some of the additives. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I took a few more pics, but most of them didnt come out well. I am enjoying the new pen and am on the hunt for a black ink that doesnt creep as much as the noodlers. MB gave me a free container of their mystery black, but that ink isnt even waterproof from what Ive read....

I get a little bit of creep with my noodlers blue-black in my Lamy. I have Aurora Blue in my MB right now, but I'm almost out. I'll refill with Noodlers and let you know it it happens on the MB.

You're only doing it to yourself. I say get one before they're gone. Recently I discovered that I really like the Thomas Mann FP. Unfortunately the only ones I can find are bundled in the three piece set. While I was at the MB boutique a few days ago I saw a TM In one of their display cases so I asked. Unfortunately the only one they had for sale had a broad nib which is a deal breaker for me. Now unfortunately I think that if I am to get a TM with a fine nib, I'm gonna have to pay top dollar for it. Point I'm trying to make is buy the pen before it becomes a Mann.....trust me, the MT is well worth it!
