1947 Rolex
Recently picked up this watch. By serial number it appears to be a 1947 model... but that is all I can find out. Stamped on back near 12:00 (in tiny script) is 14k. Any comments on model?
Much appreciated! |

trading it for 90s Submariner
ok, I don't know what it is worth or if I am getting a good deal - but trading the gold 1947 rolex for a 15 year old Submariner.

Before trading I think I would want to take the time and find out what it is worth first. I'm sure with a little bit of research you would surely be able to get a decent idea anyway. Who knows you could be making a big mistake.
Does it still work? |

Due diligence
Have been looking for info on the 1947 watch for over one year... online searches, Rolex dealers, antique watch dealers - can't find anything similar to this watch. Have even posted this original message on this forum almost one year ago hoping to find info! All said, the price of a 90's sub would be more than what I paid for this.

sorry - forgot to add that it does work. And works very well. Will wear as a daily watch for several weeks at a time (then put back on shelf for a few months before wearing again) and watch very accurate and doesn't lose any time!

sir: you need to have the watch authenticated. you can take it to the Rolex Service Center (RSC) nearest you, or to a graduate of rolex school, or better yet, to a private individual experienced in these items. I would first ask Anastasios(Tempoking) or
Steve Mulholland(Stevemulholland3) their opinions via PM. If that fails, contact Jake at Jake's Rolex blog/website(see ad below on this site) or John Buckley out of NJ/NY area: http://thebuckleyreport.blogspot.com/ Also, consider contacting member Onkyo, who is a serious collector of vintage watches. Think of how bad you'll feel if you trade away an important rolex piece from the 1940's in ignorance of its status and value..... Good luck and let us know what you find out! |

hello ptmpls. can you post a picture of the case back and serial #??
the watch you post is much later then a 1947. the movement if i see it correctly is a 1600 series movement. that movement enters production mid-60's (64-65). is there anything written on the lip of the dial under the 6 o'clock position? still a nice classic looking watch! happy hunting |

serial number
By serial number on case date would be 1947. Movement clearly 1600.

If that is an 'xxx' repair number above the serial, it would indicate Rolex repair had issues with the watch.

I am no expert in this field but I think that the serial no. (572168) was one of those which was originally used in 1947 and then recycled by Rolex - my limited archive suggests the year of re-use being 1960. Certainly the look of the watch corresponds to the styles of the late fifties/early sixties rather than the forties.
