Apollo 13 and Speed master
Saw on TV last night the Movie Apollo 13. Some good Speedmaster shots.
Made me want to go get that Speedmaster I looked at the other day. Hand wound movement. Clear case back! This one had the date and moon face added. Not bad price of around $3700 with my discounts. |

A great watch and one of my favourite chronographs with a excellent movement but just the speedy pro for me, we had quite a debate about the moon-watch in this thread.

The Speedmaster is probably one of the most legendary watches of all times.
Every WIS should have one. However, if you buy one, let it be the NASA one, which is the Speedmaster Professional.

Is there a difference besides being from the 70's vs. the newer hand wound ones?
If you were considering buying a Speedy Pro would you look for the "older" one vs. a newer one realizing an older one may need to be serviced? Just wondering...

Well, even though not the original, the Speedmaster with the date and moon phase function is nice. THe clear case back is superb!!! Since hand wound, no rotar to get in way of viewing the movement. Very nice.

I tried one on, with the black croc strap at Tourneau and it had me drooling all over it. The see through back just seals the deal for me. It's definitely on my " would love to have some day" list

Would you guys just stop it.
All this talk has me wanting one now. I will be visiting the Omega AD on Rodeo Drive pretty soon. I have a feeling I may be leaving with one of these.....

Every time you say that, it costs you money You're gonna have to buy a bigger watch box

I already need a bigger watch box. I can squeeze five in, one on the wrist and I am done.
Have two incoming already. Can you say Obsessive Compulsive???

Define "bought"
Technically I haven't paid for it, nor do I have it at home. Now, the AD has a box with my name on one and my name on the waiting list for the other. So officially, NO, I have not bought it, but , perhaps I may have made a verbal commitment to aquire such a piece (s)

Ragu,
Speedmaster would be a good choice for you. See the photo of the Astronaut with the SM strapped on the outside of his spacesuit? About the same diameter as your wrist so you should be OK. |

I love this thread. :-)
Padi, thanks for resurrecting our old thread. I really liked that discussion. I asked the Moon Man which watch he wore when I saw him again, and his response was the same: "Whatever I wore on Gemini is what I wore on Apollo." That's all the confirmation I need.

OT, Best part of Apollo 13 is when Lovell's Mom ask Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin "are you boys in the space program also?"

That's the 2nd best line...right behind Jim's mother telling Jim's daughters "If they could make a washing machine fly, my Jimmy can land it."
