Similarly, I have a Bose radio/CD player that won't play CDs unless they are store bought. Any CDs that are created via a copy will not work.

It seems to be the newer stuff, and might just be Sony-BMG CDs only, but as I said it's a crap shoot. I bought two John Coltrane CDs today, and downloaded just fine. Pink Floyd, no problem. And Sting's new live album, that just came out, no problem. But Santana, BIG PROBLEM. I emailed Sony BMG, like they will care.

That's what I am saying! You can't! It won't even play on my computer, much less be downloaded, PC or Mac, makes no difference. I don't know what they are putting on these CDs, but it stops your computer's CD/DVD drive cold. Which is my point, I paid $14.00, I expect to be able to enjoy it in my car or exercising, on my iPod. Or my home stereo thru my Wadia DAC.

Sony pulled this crap before and quietly installed a nasty rootkit on Windows PC to assist in the anti rip protection.
They got a really bad press though and removed this from their CDs fairly quickly. There are ways to rip these types of disks but you feel like you're a flipping criminal doing so. I can also hear the difference between Flac and HBR AAC (harder with 500kbs OGG though) but that's me being an old saddo music lover. Nothing digital sounds quite as good as my decent LPs used to.

This is not easy to advice to follow, but stop giving those thieves your money.
I'm fortunate to have most of all the music, I'll ever want. I do sometimes download some music, but it's rare and usually very old music and the record companies don't seem interested in protecting it too much, so I can make copies for my car or my phone. It should be noted that according to the law, it is only legal to make copies from CDs on stereo components, but not on computers. I'm not sure how one does that, but that's what I've read. The upshot is that for more than thirty years, we've been being set up by record companies to control all our music that we pay for. I do understand the necessity for copyright law and I do respect that law, but all I ask is to be able to listen to the music I buy on the devices that I own.

I guess you've learned what paying for CD's will get you. Everything in lossless quality is only clicks away.
Good luck |

As far as I am aware both Itunes download and Itunes CD rip default to AAC 128kps.
Not good ! You can certainly tweak Itunes CD rip but I'm not so sure if Itunes download site caters for higher quality downloads. It is a fact that Ipods use a far less expensive internal DAC/HP amp than does Sony or Cowon and of course the stock bud earphones are an absolute joke. Cowon's "buds" are also the same crud but they know that the customer will never use these and will instead throw a little coin into something that will make your ears sing instead of bleed.

I did this, Bit Torrent only has his music as MP3's, not at all good enough, MP3's sound horrible on my system. I am willing to pay to get a good un-compressed (AIFF, or Apple Lostless) copy of his new album, but have no clue where to find it.

Mp3's don't sound horrible, only some bad encodings do. A good mp3 is flawless. Grab something at 256kbit+ CBR (constant bit rate), or "extreme" setting VBR (variable bit rate).
The album in question is already out there in nearly every format, including lossless ones. |
