What is in a series?
wondering about this V or M or whatever series thing. Is it just a way of telling the year of a specific watch? All Rolex watches of a specific year have the same letter (like horses ?). Then what does it mean? A specific movement, style or what? Or is it just a WIS thing?

It's a WIS thing...
There is no such thing as a "series" in the Rolex Line-up. Years ago WIS found that Rolex used sequential serial numbers and the quest was on to try to determine when a specific serial was made. Charts were developed, and serial batches began to populate these charts giving a researcher an estimate of about when a watch may have been made (usually within a couple of years). Rolex began to use letter prefixes in 1987 and confused things even more. WIS began to erroneously assign a year to a specific letter. However, each letter was in production for several years.. Also, Rolex almost always has 2 or 3 prefix letters in production at any given time, so still, serial estimates are only good within a 2 or 3 year period. In the end... it is just a serial number to identify a single watch. Rolex has never started or stopped any specific attribute, trait, or do-hickey of any watch model based on it's serial number.. so 'series" means nothing, it just flows from the lips easily.......
