So how do I know when I reply to a p.m. if it went through? It doesnt save any of my sent messages, just the inbox?

There might be a setting where you can save your sent messages. However, the PM system works pretty well, so if you hit the send button it most likely sent the message.

I'm sure others will chime in with more detailed information

Go to User CP and then Edit Options.

There's a box you have to check for saving PM's.
