"How long have you owned it"
I love to browse watches (imagine that)...but when thing I've noticed is that almost universally, whenever I wear my rolex, the sales person will ask me "How long have you owned your ..."
I know they are trying to size me up. but what are they looking for? What conclusions can you draw from hearing "2 years" vs the conclusions they draw from "2 months"? Also..the other universal is that if I try on a yellow gold watch, they will comment "it goes well with your wedding ring" :) |

My guess is they are trying to probe, get you talking more and see how often you buy watches to adapt their sales tactic. And also for the Gold watches and wedding ring, it could be a reminder of your wife and the fact they would LOVE it if you bought his and her's 18K Gold watches or at least something for her too Not 100% sure because every sales persons approach or reasons for asking will be slightly different. You should post this question in the "Ask an insider" topic so Chris (who works at a UK AD) can take his best shot at it

Sales tactics, if you've only had the watch a couple of weeks you may be less likely to pull the trigger on another. How little they know us

There's pre prepared responses to anything you say. It's just polite banter. If you've had it a while then it's time for a new one, if it's been a few months then you need to diversify your collection with a different piece.

Probably just a more personable conversation starter. They ask about your watch, they compliment, and create a relationship. But this is my take on what they do with that info:
If you've purchased your watch recently and back in the store, they know you're a watch fanatic and probably know your stuff or atleast know what you're looking for. If you've had your watch for a long time and are back in the store, they figure you are in the market for a new one and have a potential sale on their hands. All in all just trying to build a relationship with their customer and trying to learn about them. |

Their job is to sell watches. Anything to get you engaged in coversation will create a bond with them, and open the door for sales.

I'd love someone to ask me that. Then I could say "Longer than you've been alive".
