Even if this was a "regular" watch I wouldn't bid on it considering the sellers e-bay track record.

So maybe you make some money off of this, or you end up keeping it. Owning something that belonged to a person such as him just feels wrong.

Icon13 I am staying away

Thinking about who owned this watch before makes me only want to purchase it for one purpose…. Dismantle it for parts. This 1680 could die so others could be reborn. Of course after soaking it in bleach I would take it to a Buddhist Temple and have the Monks blessed it to remove any residual bad karma it may have. It would also destroy the case back as simply removing the engraving is not sufficient in my mind.

With that said the most important reasons I would avoid this 1680 is the seller and the lack of information:

1. Bad images. Looks like he is hiding too much.
2. Can’t tell if the dial is correct fro the serial number range. Fake dial?
3. No proof the engraving was on the case back when purchased at the auction. It may have been added for effect.
4. I would want images of the watch taken at the original auction so I can see that nothing has been changed.
5. The watch has no real history only a letter stating what it is and that could be fake. I would not want to waist the time to contact the original auction house to authenticate the watch.
6. The original auction letter has the sell price and the buyer’s name blacked out.
a. So some of the history is destroyed
b. Makes me question why the seller needs to hide their name? Are they intending to scam a buyer on ebay?
7. The seller is defiantly flipping it for a quick profit. Because he is flipping it I would be worried about what he has done to the watch to get it ready for ebay?
8. Buyers history
a. Has purchased watch parts from a known source of replica (fake) parts.
b. Has no real history of being a seller or buyer other than ordering a few parts on ebay.
c. All of this makes me question if the seller has changed out anything on the watch???
9. The bezel insert is newer with a thin font. Is the insert real?
10. In addition the bezel insert looks like it does not fit well and is being held in with snot.
11. Why did the seller not clean the watch first?

So I am staying away. Far away. Looks like a good way to lose money.

Great reply Rags, why delete the truth????? It's not the crooks watch to begin with!! It belongs to 100's and 100's of others and their investments.

I think this seller may be Bernie himself using a wifi connection from the big house trying to scam a few extra bucks so he can afford more smokes to trade with his fellow inmates. Whomever the seller is, likely fraud. Why?

Check out the one picture in the eBay listing that refers to this watch as being part of Lot 199, then check out what exactly was part of Lot 199 listed on this website here: (http://www.txauction.com/photos.cfm?start=196&aid=229). No mention of any Rolex Submariner per the Madoff auctioneer's own site.

Unbelievable.

Here is the simple answer: likely 80% of us or better.

Bernie just played this game on a much larger scale. So did the boyz at Enron. So did the bank exec's on Wall Street who tanked the economy and then your tax dollars not only bailed them out but covered their multi-million dollar bonuses....that has or will hurt more citizens then Bernie's play.

So while I do not condone what Bernie or any of those other scammers did - I think that more people then we would admit to in society look for an opportunity and often we take it to save (scam) a couple bucks here and there. Anyone here a defense or divorce lawyer? I rest my case.

And I would love to own this piece if the price was right!
Even though I don't condone bending the rules in any shape or form, I agree that a lot of people do it. Not only that does not make it right, there is a huge difference between minimum-wage earners not reporting their tips verses a multi millionaire cheating ordinary folks out of their retirement savings. Let’s not forget Madoff was already rich. He used to be non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market.

there is a difference between bending the rules for financial gain and stealing Billions of Dollars IMHO.

Also General he was the one that pretty much created NASDAQ and electronic trading. before it was all manual, he invented the software and could undercut other sellers due to having created an automated system. . Smart guy but a thief.

If I wanted a red Sub bad enough, I guess I might be interested, but I really doubt that I'd ever tell anyone whom it belonged to, much less pay a premium for it's having been owned by such a scoundrel and the lowest kind, to boot.

Anyone hear anything further on this one? I think it sold on eBay for $7550 USD. My email 'question' to the seller was if he would do a face to face at an AD for validation and sale..his answer was 'Absolutely!'....so who knows....

The auction catalogue is in PDF format. I searched the entire thing and there were a few Rolexes in the auction, just not this one that I could find. They also have some example forms that could be used to create a receipt. Also there is no mention on any of the other watches being engraved. I think he had quite a collection at one time and I doubt he would have had any of them engraved.
