New and Mildly Confused
Hi,
I'm new and shopping.... I'm also a little confused and leery about places selling pre-owned watches. I'm leaning toward a two-tone datejust with an oyster band. I saw a near-match at a store last week, and asked about getting one with a white face instead of the gold that was on the watch. The sales guy told me he could have his guy swap in the face I wanted within a couple of hours and not charge me for the change. My question is, is that good service and a place with a competent on-site tech, is it the mark of someone who I shouldn't trust, since they are very willing to juggle parts as necessary??? Thanks, --Mike |

Hi Mike, Welcome to TRF! I'd be very wary of such "too good to be true" deals. It's best you know the seller before nose-diving into such transactions. Or you'd be best off visiting your AD to check out what's available. Good luck - JJ

Hi Mike
Welcome! I would not, if buying a new watch, allow the seller to change the dial. These days Rolex prints the dial colour on the official warranty. If down the track you go to sell your watch, it will have a different dial colour to that specified on the official Rolex warranty. This may affect the resale price of your watch. To many people the change of the dial to another dial is no big deal, but to some it can make a difference. I can't see why you can't get the dial you want straight up from an authorised dealer. You may get the dial changed and it might be fine, but I would prefer to get the watch from the factory the way it was intended. It is hard to say who and how careful the person changing the dial would be? Good Luck and let us know how you go. |

Welcome to TRF If you're leary about the place selling the watch, then I would walk away. If you're going to change the dial then you would want to make sure that it's a genuine Rolex dial and not an aftermarket. Some places can acquire them, but would you know for sure?

Thanks for the input.
The store in this case is one of the Jewelers Row places in Chicago. They have a decent Rolex selection; all pre-owned. It was interesting, because the sales guy did differentiate between his "genuine Rolex" faces, and his "aftermarket" ones. He had them in separate parts of his display, and said he offered both, as some customers would rather save a few bucks than get a genuine face. I'm still shopping, so we'll see what I can find. Thanks again |

Mike,Welome to TRF.
It seems most everyone here is "mildly confused" of something ;) Probably need more particulars on your delimma to make a good judgement. Was this a reputable jeweler or an Authorized Dealer of Rolex? If this store deals in lots of used Rolex, it might be possible to have "spare" parts in the back, but probably that quick a swap would be aftermarket. |
