702 vs 703 Crown......
I am having my 1665 serviced.......
My watch is from 1977 and originally came with the 702 crown (Triple lock without the external gasket) My watch maker thinks he may have an NOS 702 crown and tube.... I told him to go with that should he indeed have one........ My thought originally was to have the newer version (703) with the external gasket put on........But he assured me that it will not make the watch any more water proof.... So I opted for keeping the watch to it's original specs........... Thoughts??? |

I like the idea of sticking with the original equipment. I have a twin lock crown on my red sub and prefer it to the newer triplocks even if it is less water proof.

If he has some NOS crowns around, I would want to look at them.. Back in the late 70's, early 80's they changed the crown a bit...
Look at yours... if it has the trip-dots that look like tiny donuts (hollow dots), then I would try to find one like that... (also the ends of the coronet) The newer ones have the center of the dots convex as opposed to concave.. It's just a look and not functional, but it's nice to match as best you can.........

On both of my 1680s I have choose to keep the 702 crown and not replace them with the 703. My thought is the watches are vintage and I should go out of my way to keep all the parts period correct.
