Well, there are two kinds of taper.

One is the width of the strap at the lugs compared to tip/buckle.

My strap is made 26mm at the lugs because it is a Radiomir (I could go up to 27mm really).
The tip of the strap and the buckle is 24mm.
So my strap tapers from 26 to 24. Shorthand is 26/24.
You'll often see other measures like 120/75. That is the overall length of the tail side and the buckle side in mm, but those numbers have nothing to due with taper.

See how the tail side is narrow at the tip (24mm) and thick and the lug (26mm)
See how the thick at the the strap is at lug (26mm) and the buckle side is narrow (24mm)

There is also another kind of taper that is needed for deployant buckles, but this is the thickness (or padding) of the strap. Deployant straps are more padded near the lugs and thinner near the deployant. This is necessary for the deployant to fit properly. My strap was made for a buckle, so it has nearly the same padding throughout (although very slighly thinner at the tail side, but not enough for a deployant to work.)
