Yep love the cap Alcan! Hang on to those as they are only given out by Rolex at the regatta. Only one watch is ever awarded as a trophy. Usually for the more prestigious races, its a platinum Yacht Master for the major races such as The Rolex Sydney Hobart, Rolex Fastnet, Rolex Middle Sea Race or in our case the YM for the IRC US Champs....then for Regatta wins it seems to be the Sub awarded...again only 1 watch is awarded to the owner. I am aware of one owner who purchased Rolex Subs for the entire crew as a way to mark their achievement. Really cool. Ill be lining up for my 6th Rolex Sydney Hobart this December and i know the old man will be with me on the rail! My Rolex will come with me but it'll be safe in the nav desk! Thanks again for all your kind comments.

Have just joined this great forum and have been really enjoying the threads and posts. As a proud new member I feel i have to share this story as its tragic but with a great ending. My father was a professional yachtsman in the 70's and 80's and when i was 15 back in 1980 he sent me a Rolex 1680 (?) that he won in a yachting regatta in the US. I insured the watch and loved it especially referring to my National Geographic ads of the day with the same watch. I felt pretty special with my Rolex Sub! After owning the watch for about 3 months i was surfing at Freshwater Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches when catching a wave the band broke (not sure what part) and the watch came off. I totally panicked and swam around for ages trying to find it and eventually walked home in tears as a shattered teenager realising i had just lost something that was priceless to me. For the next week i dived with a mask in vain to find the watch but no joy.
Its now 2011 and since that sad day as a 15 year old i had always planned to replace Dad's Rolex. In 2003 my father passed away and so i decided the time was right to carry on the yachting legacy of my father by carrying his ashes in the Rolex Sydney Hobart in 2004. We were smashed in Bass Strait and retired so i went again with his ashes on 05 to finish the job and get my Dad to Hobart one more time. We finished 3rd which led to my crewing on a grand prix race yacht in the US and Caribbean for the last 5 years.
Well after 30 years of saying one day ill replace Dads Rolex, we finally won our first Rolex watch by winning the International Regatta in St Thomas in 2009. It was in St Thomas that my father spent a lot of time racing and i met all his old mates who were thrilled at me being on the winning boat.
The watch was presented to me by the owner and its been bloody emotional for me to finally come full circle after 30 years and replace the Rolex Sub, especially by winning it with my crew and also where my Dad spent a lot of his life sailing and racing. We have now won 4 Rolex watches (3 Subs and a YM) for Rolex Big Boat Series and US Nationals in San Francisco.
Here are some photos (and a cool Rolex Ad that our yacht is in racing in the Big Boat Series in San Fran) of my Submariner that ill treasure and wear with pride...but NEVER in the surf again!
Love the site and am stoked and proud to once again to be a part of the Rolex family. Cheers
Great story, thanx for sharing and welcome to TRF
