Q's re '82 Black on Black Sub
My wife took a Sub from a local jewelrer home for viewing and I'm seriously considering buying it. But I know nothing about Rolexes and the jewelrer was not really knowlegeable about Rolexes nor did he have the inclination to find out or vouch that it was a genuine item.
Fortunately, I found this forum and was hoping to get some feedback from the vets on this board. There are no box or papers, other than the green sticker on the back of the case, bearing the serial number. The serial number begins with 72767 and it appears the previous owner never wore it. I was told it sat in the safe for almost 30 years other than servicing--but no history provided. The asking price is $4,500.00 cash and I have to give the owner a response by tomorrow and any advise would not only be welcomed, but appreciated. Soon to be Sub owner in CA p.s. Still trying to figure out how to upload some pics |

If the vendor is not really knowledgable about Rolexes and didn't have the inclination to find out or vouch for it then how can he have any confidence in what he is trading? Owner of a 30 year watch looks after it so passionately that it only comes out of the safe for service, maintains the original caseback sticker with serial no. but no service history or orig box/papers?. I feel if someone is disciplined enough to keep it locked away in a safe for so long why would they not keep all associated paperwork? Why is the vendor pushing for a response tomorrow. A SIX figure serial no 72767* indicates 1981/82, ask him to remove the bracelet, the serial no. is present between the lugs at the six o'clock position, model no at the 12 posn (read up on the other markings and of those on the bracelet). Ask him to open the caseback, if he claims he cannot then ask yourself how he knows what is inside? Compare the movement to that expected.
In your position I would at the very least beg a Rolex Authorised Dealer (AD)/other reputable jeweller/pawnbroker to quickly check it out & request they check against Lost/Stolen register. Any other Forum members near you help you out? Hope it helps, good luck. |

Thank you Scunner for your prompt response. Jewelrer is a good guy that my wife has known for years. He's not that all interested in bringing in watches on trades and I'm told is doing this as a favor for the seller's family.
