iPad 2 Smart Cover Magnets

Just picked up an iPad 2 today (64gb wifi 3G white) and am very happy with it so far--typing this very post on it

I do have one concern though... In my flipping and adjusting the iPad on my lap, my watch has come very close to the smart cover magnets a few times now. The magnets seems to be quite strong, so I am wondering if they could potentially be damaging for a mechanical watch. I'll obviously keep the watch from coming in direct contact with the magnets, but I wonder if a few close skims would cause any damage. Anyways just wondering if anyone else has had problems with the magnets. Guess I should also avoid resting my wallet on it on my nightstand during the night.

Yeh rub it in to us Apple users ( since 1976) about those perks.Next thing we will hear how Rolex employees get new models pre Basil. Actually I got up at 5AM EDT on March 11 to get mine online. I've had no problems with my watch around low level magnets. Of course I would not take it in an MRI.

Sounds like a perfectly valid reason to own a Milgauss ;-)

I agree.. if you think it will... now here's a good excuse to get Milgauss and don't feel guilty.

I have a question for you experienced iPad users.

On many forums (like this one) when using a computer you can see a short preview of a thread by hovering your mouse cursor over the thread title. I like doing this to quickly scan new topics and decide which ones I really want to open.

Can the iPad do this? And if so, how, when your finger is the "mouse" and pointing is essentially the same as clicking?

Last fall I bought a Mac Book Air instead of an iPad, because it only cost very slightly more, is only very slightly larger, and it seems very much more capable. But, yeah, it just doesnt have as much of the "cool" factor.

Yes, I have been wondering about this too and am very concerned.
A magnet is a magnet and magnetism is not good for mechanical watches.
Are the magnets embedded in the ipad as well as the cover?

I will wager that this is something that will become an issue for apple.

IMHO you guys worry to much about your Rolex watches, now Rolex oyster are mainly made from S.steel or precious metals when used in conjunction with nickel, brass or beryllium, bronze or Glucydur balance wheels pallet forks etc so they are very anti-magnetic to begin with. And even with the Nivarox hairsprings they had to meet the Swiss standard for anti-magnetic watches.Which is to withstand a strong magnetic field of 4800 Amps per meter, and to keeps on running with a maximum deviation of 15- 30 seconds per day.Now this test I am 100% sure that 99% of all watch wearers would never subject or come into contact with such a strong magnetic field.Myself now work with and repair powerful transceivers that put out a very strong magnetic field and never ever had a problem with Rolex or any other mechanical watch I was wearing. And if any watch did get magnetised its a very very very simple process to de-magnetise.

While I agree with you completely, you are assuming he's talking about a Rolex, since there's nothing in the OP to suggest anything Rolex.

A bit off the topic of this thread but to answer your question, no you can't see a preview of a thread on a ipad2.....I'm typing on mine right now, love it though.

Well if you read my post I did state Rolex or any other mechanical watch. And today nearly all Swiss/European watches today have to pass the Swiss or similar anti-magnetic test.
