YM 35mm: Did Rolex make a stupid marketing mistake?

I was just looking on Rolex's official website and noticed that the 35mm YM is now listed under the women's category. To me, this wreaks of ill conception - what man would ever buy one now? Previously it would have worked well for a guy with a smaller wrist or someone who wanted a Rolex Professional for dressier occasions, but now?!?!

I understand that it's primarily women buying these things, but listing it as a men's watch wouldn't in my opinion, make a woman any less likely to buy it, while listing it as a women's watch will most certainly lead men everywhere to reject it.

I am sure the number of potential male buyers for this model are so tiny, they can barely measured... So, offending those 6 guys that were thinkin of buying one, is not really an issue for the monolithic Rolex corp... (they sell in excess of 600,000 watches a year)

I think it is in the correct category. Like it or not the current trend is towards larger watches and larger watches/mens watches on women are super HOT right now IMO

My wifes wears the 36mm dj flower dial with diamond bezel, this is mens size, is 36mm, would they list this in the mens, I dont know many men that would wear a flower dial Rolex but I am sure some would... I dont really think it matters where they put it.

I have always thought of the midsize YM as a ladies watch

That size is acceptable for a man in a nice dress watch. But sports watch? 35mm is women's size, I think.

Rolex had also put the 36mm datejust in the women's section.

I had actually considered the 35 YM, looks good in pictures. But as recommended by people here, I went to the AD and tried it on. The AD had me try on the 40 also and it looked much better. My plan was to get it pre owned. But for the same cash I went with a Brand new! sub no date and am extremely happy. Now I am saving up for the big YM to fulfill the need for a rolex with a date function.

PS, the crown looks wrong on the 35 too.

I agree its primary market will be women. However, I have seen men wear them, in fact I had a teacher who wore a midsize two-tone version (though this was about a decade ago).

Perhaps the reason Rolex finally went with the classification as women's is that they discontinued the 34mm men's watches, making that the smallest men's watch available. Now they can simply say that men's watches start 36mm.

Funny, I knew a guy 10 years ago that had a TT YM, it was the only one I have ever seen...

I know a guy who wears a TT 35mm YM. He is a loudmouth and has a boarish attitude. When he sees my watch, he calls it a "Rolox, with a O", half jokingly implying mine is a fake. I've kept my mouth shut but I've always wanted to ask him why he wore a "woman's watch". I have resisted this baser urge so far.....
