Advise - yacht master

Hello All,

I have a chance to buy a 1997 yacht master Rolex, Is there any differences in the watch from a 2011, Is the Bracelet the same ect.. Any advise would be appreciated. What should one pay for such a watch in fine condition?

Thank you!

If it's a Pt/SS there is some good advice in this thread:

Maybe with the economy recovering, more people are getting into yachting.

I'm liking that!

I wouldn't call my 29 footer a yacht, but i just may have to use that as an excuse for my girlfriend

Go for it! One day I plan to use snorkeling as an excuse to add a DSSD to my collection.

All of the YM are about the same... there is a difference in the red lettering, some are darker then others. Not sure when the difference occured. YM is a great watch. You should go for it. I say a fair price range with full box and paper around 5k.

I don't think, that the SS/Pt model existed in 1997. Am I wrong about this?

"I wouldn't call my 29 footer a yacht, but i just may have to use that as an excuse for my girlfriend " Will she also let you acquire the other mandatory accessories (at least two hot blondes) you know just for the "yacht"

It's the stainless and gold with blue face. This one is also a 35mm watch, I think the new ones are 40mm.

Thanks for your help!

The introduction of the Yacht-Master ref.16628 was in 1992, full 18kt gold with white dial and Rolex caliber 3135 movement. In 1994, Rolex introduced smaller editions, ref. 68628 @ 35mm and ref. 69628 @ 29mm. Also in gold, and available with white and blue dial. The smaller Yacht-Master watches have Rolex caliber 2135.

Rolex introduced the steel/platinum Yacht-Master series during Basel in 1999. The 40mm version was reference 16622, followed by the intermediate (ref. 168622 @ 35mm) and lady’s (ref. 169622 @ 29mm) versions.

My V serial 40mm ss/plat still have the stamped sheet metal clasp so I don't think you have to worry too much about difference.

No major changes, but plenty smaller ones, such as a switch from glossy red paint to matte, thinner fonts, removal of the gray shadow, less sparkly dial and addition of the engraved rehaut.

Uh, pretty significant difference between the YM and YMII.

The YM is more of a "Sub II". :-)
