Bloomberg $1.16million Rolex

Hi all. Did anyone happen to read the latest bloomberg magazine?
They have a Rolex watch made in 1942 that sold in an auction for $1.16 million. It says it is a stainless steel chronograph one of 12. Took a picture of the watch from the magazine. Anyone know what it is and the story behind this timepiece?

I think so too! They have such a classy look with the vintage timepieces.

Sold earlier this week in Geneva. As for classic vintage watches- you can't reproduce an era. They are classic timepieces which are captured best in their time as far as I am concerned. The allure of the old school vintage watches is what drives many of us to the great heritage of Rolex!!

I agree 100%. Nothing is sader than "heritage" or "homage" reproductions.

I agree, but it would be nice to have a "throw back" model and have hints of classic pieces. I know it would never happen, I would just like it!

The watch is one of 12 made of which 8 are left in existence. It is a 1942 Rolex reference 4113 is part of a special collection of watches that were never meant to be sold on the open market. They were manufactured as gifts to Italian and British race drivers of the time who needed the watches’ chronograph functions to monitor their lap times. So now you understand why ref. 4113 timepieces are the most valuable and most desirable Rolexes in the world.

Rolex should do a reissue line like Gibson does for its '59 bursts. Old school construction, old school movements, and sell them at semi-affordable normal sports watch prices.

When I read the thread title, I thought it was going to be a photo of Bloomberg at a tuxedo party with the $1.16 million dollar Rolex on his wrist.

Breitling does a really nice job bringing back their heritage look, would be cool if Rolex put out a few limited runs. Certainly wouldn't come close to the character and feel of the real vintage pieces though, but thats what makes them special :)

I would like to see a brand new Rolex model name or two.
For example, a general sports watch. Rolex has made diving, car racing, yachting, and mountain climbing specific watches, but not one with a "general sports" conceptual origin. They could name it something like "Activa" and then market it by using baseball, football, soccer, tennis, golf etc... players. Basic stainless steel case and bracelet. 3 basic dial choices; white with red arabic, yellow dial with gray arabic, royal blue dial with black arabic. General sports watch. In future years Rolex could keep the same theme/concept, but update with new color dials. MSRP $5,300.
Another possible new theme/concept model could be aimed at the age 25-35 consumer. Fun, whimsical dials. Not your grandfathers Rolex. Maybe name it "Joy". MSRP $4,300.

That's amazing, I saw a website that had the most expensice watches in the world. In really what it came down to the author of the post was more diamonds/jewels the watch had the more expensive it was.

But this one really is one of those one-of a kind watches. No precious metals fancy over the top functions ( ringing bell, star map ) what a nice piece of history to own.

Btw , Can anyone explain what the hands are for and what do the Sub dials do?

I noticed 4 hands , obviously 2 of those are for hours+minutes and the really long skinny one probably keeps track of second for the chronograph but what about the longer thicker one?

2 chronographs in one watch ?
