Cheapest Year?

I'm looking for a Sub Date for my father's birthday. He's not up on the new shape but he's also not up on spending over the odds for a brand new in box (it will be worn with no babying whatsoever so scratches are not a problem). I will be putting money towards the purchase of course.
I was wondering if there was a particular timeframe to buy preowned Rolexes from for a bit cheaper. Before treading into vintage territory ? I was thinking maybe late '80s early '90s? He'd love the lugholes and no engraved rehaut or any of the modern fancypants trimmings!
Chaers!

Yes, me and my father are two unbelieveably tightfisted cheapskates!

I would think expect a pretty significant price drop when you get back to early 90's age watches. I don't know that it would change a whole lot by going a few years further back, though. Keep in mind that a watch as old as 1995 could have had a recent service or none at all, so knowing the last service date can swing the value $500, or so.

There are plenty of subs in the low 3k range floating around the for sale section. Not sure if you can do better then that.
