Submariner stopped, wouldn't start again with winding...

Hi gang,

My dad gave me an early eighties Submariner last year that I love. I sent it in for cleaning (Rolex, NYC) about 8 months ago and the watch has run perfectly ever since (replaced the hands, face and lens as well).

Just today I pulled it out of a backpack that I stuffed it in, yesterday, before rock climbing and it was still ticking. The 40-45 hour reserve always works perfectly. As I hadn't worn it in a day - I decided to unscrew the crown and wind it. While screwing the crown back in - I screwed it too tight and it stopped ticking. This had happened before (last year) and my Dad's new Rolex's have done this as well. It didn't worry me. I just unscrewed the crown again. Here is where I get worried... After unscrewing - it didn't start up again. After rescrewing it back in, loosely, it didn't start up again. After winding it again, it didn't start up again. It just sat there. Finally, I shook it and it started up again... now it seems fine.

Is this cause for concern? Anybody had this happen before?

Thanks!

Hmm. That sounds weird. Would the watch be a 16800?

no major concern, it sometimes takes a shake to get it going again

Well heck, I don't know what to do now!

The watch is working perfectly. It's smooth, and functions flawlessly. There seems no need to send it back in to me. It's stopped before from screwing the crown in too tight - this seems a common problem. Has anyone else had this part happen?

If I were to send it back in - I would be without it for another 2-3 months and I totally hate that...

I'm playing with it right now and no matter how tight I screw the crown it won't stop ticking.

Does anyone else think it was just a one time - need to shake it - no big deal? It's a perfect piece of machinery now, but this forum has made me nervous

It won't take longer than 3-4 weeks max! They always expedite warranty work.

Part of what you pay for with a RSC job is the warranty of the work. it's yours, you paid for it. I know it's a hassle to send the wtach back and to be without it but it is reassuring to know that things are right.

I have never heard of a Rolex not running because the crown was screwed in too tight.

I'm not even sure what "too tight" means; just how much torque can you put on that little part..?
