Winding rolex sub c
Hey guys I have a quick question. I have been wearing my new rolex sub c for two days now and just decided to try and manually wind the watch to see what it felt like. I let the watch sit overnight so I knew it would not be fully wound in the morning. Anyway I tried to wind it this morning and was surprised number 1 how much force it took to wind the watch. And it also made a clicking noise as I wound the watch, even though it was not fully wound. Is this normal ? I decided I'm going to let the watch completely die and try winding it again to get a better feel for it. Any inputs would be appreciated.

It shouldn't take any force to wind it.

Sounds very bad ,should be silky smooth to wind, and no clicks. Needs taking
back to Rolex AD pretty quick I would say ! |

Are your sure it's in position 1? That is you you just unscrewed the crown?

Should not take any force whatsoever to wind. And so you know, you don't have to let the watch wind down before you wind it up. You cannot overwind it.

Yes it is in position 1. It sounds like a ratchet kind of when I am winding it.

Yes I would say clicking is a better way to describe it.

If you have it between 1 and 2 this kind of behavior can occur. Verify that you have it in position 1 and try again.

Mine clicks and there is some resistance, although it had more when new. I wonder if it is tight fitting gaskets?

Sounds like the clicking is typical. And I think your right the watch is brand new and the gaskets are probably very tight.I am going to give the watch time to die down some then I will try again

A little resistance is perfectly normal - and yes you will hear little clicks as you wind it. There is a built-in clutch that keeps you from overwinding. 40 turns is fully-wound.

Even after 8 hours at rest my Sub C is close to fully wound. A watch near full wind absolutely has more resistance. And you always hear a soft clicking as the mainspring is wound and the gears turn. When the clicking sound stops, and you hear/feel the spring slip it's fully wound.
If I do wind in the morning, I rarely do, it only takes 5-8 winds to get it back to full wind. When I wind from the watch being stopped, at the beginning, there's noticeably less resistance. When the watch is near a full wind, there's a lot more. Your watch is totally normal. |

Just out of interest, did you try to wind it about 2 hours either side of midnight? Sounds very similar to when you're on the date setting and trying to adjust in that time frame

My Sub does not click, it is very sss...ssss...type of winding...why would it click? do you know the parts of a Rolex?, none of the winding parts would produce a click click noise...Prob best thing to do is take it in for service...

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it is a fake. There could well be an issue with the movement, or, as I suggested in my post, there could be resistance arising from the date trying to be adjusted either side of midnight. Calling it a fake isn't helpful for the OP

If you look at a typical mvt you'll see a little spring loaded hook that engages the gears as you wind the MS. Each time it advances to the next gear tooth, there's a faint click as it slips into that gear tooth, if it didn't the mainspring would never stay put as you put more pressure on it by winding, it's a ratcheting type of thing, which the OP even said it seemed like. It's this faint click you hear at regular intervals as you wind. I should mention you'll only hear it with the watch up to your ear as you're winding.
Every watch I own makes a similar sound when slowly winding with the watch to your ear, and no, didn't buy them from Chung Fat Co in Chinatown. :) |

I just went to wind my sub c after letting it sit for 10 hours. And it is pefectly fine, I think I was just trying to wind the watch when it was already fully wound. And yes if you listen carefully you can hear clicking, the ratchet like sound. Which is normal according to 2 other sub c owners. Chrisis averted. Thanks for the help.
and no its not a fake |

It has to click. If there was not a rachet, a stop, a pawl, or a brake of some type each time the wind mechanism was advanced it would unwind when you let go.
