--Forgive me if I seemed "hidden." I went to this dealer with a relative and it seemed fairly legitimate. They had A LOT of watches from a variety of high-end brands. Am I positive it was a "AD?" Absolutely not. But I'm 85% sure it's a real Submariner. Their store was in the process of moving but it was quite large and packed with time pieces.

As the watch is from Italy, you purchased it from a grey-market dealer there and not an AD.

I for my part would be interested to know, how much you have paid, and where you have purchased it. I'd call the dealer to ask, if he has access to a perfect Sea Dweller 4000
--The price is about $5.5K USD. My relative helped negotiate the price in Cantonese and apparently they had to pre-order it so I just paid and picked it up. I've sent my relative an email asking for the old store location so I could look it up. Pending his reply I'll keep you posted. Also, they did have the Sea Dweller, not sure if it was the 4000 but they definitely have some for sale.

Giving some information back would be a nice way of contributing too......

And don't worry, it looks like a perfectly all right 16,610 Submariner. Am I asking too much by asking you to share w us the price paid in Hong Kong Dollars?

The Client No on the warranty card is #170.
Someone on here informed me that the HK "AD" is #880.

How would I go about tracking down where my Sub came from?
All I know is it's originally from Italy and I bought it from a "Grey Dealer?"

HK is 888 ;)
And it's the national code, it's not an AD. AD stands for an authorized Dealer and there are probably over 100 of them in HK.

And knowing, that it was initially brought to the italian market is the best info, that you'll get.

You can go with the individual number to get an idea roughly, when the case has been produced, but I guess, that you already have a random serial number - so that'll not work.

My wife is from Hongkong and to my experience, local people know exactly where the good dealers are and how to avoid the bad eggs. So, if your relatives pointed you to the dealer, you don't have to worry at all.

Plus the watch from your pics seems to be genuine. So, you don't worry, enjoy the watch!

That one is a big no and the thread would be closed in no time by the moderators. Forum rules that we all abide by. Just put your mind at rest, it looks legit and if you share with us a name and address for the shop, we will tell you to 90% probability if the guys are legit or not.

Don't worry about grey market in HK, it's rampant and trustworthy if you know your salt. I've been buying grey and second hand for friends and relatives for years. No need to freak out. I prefer HK to any AD in Europe or elsewhere.

The only reason why we kept asking who the dealer was is because our members know alot of dealers in Hong Kong and would know instantly if you got it from a good place or not.

Stop worrying about your watch and enjoy it. That's why you brought it for right?

It's not a good picture and with a critical eye you could start picking flaws in your watch.

You say that you think it's got an 85% chance of being genuine and you're awfully vague and woolly with your answers.

There's a chance that you are trying to mess us around here.

--LOOK. I'm not trying to mess about with anyone here.
I bought this watch in HK and am just trying to make sure of its authenticity. Sorry if I seem short I'm simply trying to express that my intentions are genuine. If I seem vague or woolly it's not on purpose.

Can you please go in depth about the flaws you say you see so I can take a closer look and post more pictures please?

Thanks.

Man this thread is crazy! A lot of good information mixed in with a lot of confusing questions?

I have probably less than 1% of the Rolex knowledge these fine gentleman have but why would you take possession of a Rolex that doesn't line up the 12 o'clock position and the 'upside down triangle' exactly? That was one of the few things I checked on mine before taking it home. It's a Rolex and my novice thinking at the time was they had to line up perfectly!

-lol, I take responsibility for the crazy questions.

-As for the upside down triangle on the bezel lining up exactly at the "12-hour" mark; someone on here told me he'd seen it before.

What do you guys think?

I've looked online on various forums but the difference for this noob is hard to spot.

I feel like I'm the new kid on the first day of school.

Thanks!
You had to do your homework BEFORE buying !!

We never give away 5k without KNOWING what the varieties are.

At the end, you should consider yourself lucky if the watch is real.

I am enjoying this piece of art everyday I wear it. I just don't want to enjoy something that's not real!

I know, just like Warren Buffett did yesterday investing $5 BILLION in Bank of America. I invested a fraction. The "gray" dealer I bought this from in HK seemed as legitimate as anyone so I had confidence when I purchased it. However when I read some of the threads regarding fake's and how to know your watch is genuine I began to worry.

Now however, I can say I'm relieved and to be honest, even if it was fake, there ain't shit I can do about it now! Let sleeping dogs lie, I guess.

THanks for all the great and not so great feedback. All in all it was an knowledgeable affair!

Pull out the stem and set the hands.. If they go clockwise when you turn the crown clockwise, it's likely an authentic Rolex..

All ETA movements used in replica Subs turn opposite the crown..

Thanks for that one. Can you elaborate a little more. Fake Rolex's turn counter clockwise? seems like a pretty easy fix for a counterfeiter, no?

While not germain to this particular series of Submariner, we should probably point out that the vintage movements turn in the same direction as the ETA movements. For example, the movements found in the 1680 turn in this direction.

The replica market just puts together parts, they are not watchmakers with the skill or knowlede about how to fabricate and install a complete separate set of gears and pinions to get the hands to reverse....

If you want to learn and discuss more about fakes, there are plenty of Forums dedicated to this illegal enterprize.. TRF is about the discussion of authentic Rolex watches...
