A new GMTII owner with question?
I love my new SS GMT-II with the ceramic bezel!! I was curious about what the newest number/letter was on them... Mine starts with a "G" if I'm looking at the right number?... Also I had bought a GMT-II back in 2001 and with other new rolexes at the time they came with a GREEN Holograph sticker on the back that was next to impossible to take off. I eventually just let mine wear off... My new 2011 GMT does not have one? Thanks for any info. John

Also, newer Rolex watches no longer have the hologram on the back, just a clear protective plastic with a green part that is ment to be used to lift it off. |

I bought a BNIB from Bucherer in Frankfurt Germany in May of this year and its a G series. Aparently bucherer always has the latest series for the models.

How are we to know the approximate year of manufacture with this new random series? We are so used to the previous series which tell us the year of manufacture

Rolex does not want you to complain to them of how old your watch is...thus, new serial number system. After servicing (at 5 years), does it really matter how old your watch is??

I would hope so. Not being able to date the production of the watch seems undesirable. 20 years from now, how will people go hunting for their birth year grails???

There is no such thing as a series model of any Rolex watch, all any serial is by a appoximation by some Internet code. Its just a rough indication when a case was stamped and its possible to have several letters and random running at the same time. Now when the movement was made thats in any particular case well only Rolex knows when that was made. That could be weeks, months, or a years plus old before its matched to any case. The Series date stuff is not always when a completed watch was made and shipped to AD.And one letter could be older or newer made or visa versa its not a 100% accurate to the day week month or year.

No they never did all they could ever tell you by some Internet code was a approximation when a case/clasp was stamped. And not necessarily when a fully completed watch was made and shipped world wide for sale. And will one particular letter last any longer than any other letter random or Tom,Dick or Harry. If bought new from AD they all get the same two year warranty and will all need a service approximately 5 year after to strap it on your wrist. And as long as you service it after,I cannot see why any Rolex will not last a life time and beyond. There are Millions of them in this world today many 40 plus years old and still ticking strong no matter what the serial is.

Thanks all, I bought my first GMT-II in Saint Maartin Lesser Antilles Caribbean back in 2001 When I made Captain for an Airline and the AD "Lucky" was his name (no lie). He was specific about the year it came into his store showing me the calendar that came with the box/watch. My recent purchase was in NYC last week from Tourneau (yes I've heard good and bad things from them, but I actually know the AD guy since high school and he gave me a great price on my old watch). He also told me that it just came into the store. Well I realized that although they may have just gotten it, it might have been on the shelf somewhere for awhile. I have no hang ups about the specific month but just glad to know that it was this years model number. This year has specific achievements in my life that instigated this great purchase. Which I am reminded of each time I look at my wrist! Pics to come... My avatar is of my old GMT circa 2001
