I'm 45 and will never take a job I hate. Life is too damn short.

Sorry, need to vent.

Guys, a job is just a means to justify an end, does it really matter how much you like or hate it as long as it pays well enough to buy your Rolexes and other pleasures in life that make you happy?;)..Just my 2 c.

100% agree

a job is a job

what and how you make out of it... a job is a means to take home a good pay cheque monthly

I thought it was material for an interesting discussion ... maybe not.
I get what you're saying 100%.

I started out with a sensible government job then worked in the Head Office of a Bank for a bit but I couldn't stand it.
In my late teens/early twenties I took a serious hobby I'd done since childhood and tried to turn that into a good living...
For seven years I took the best jobs I could as a means to an end, some were good, some were bloody awful! I learned a lot from both types... How to do things and, just as important, how NOT to do things!

About 6 years ago the Long Haired General and I bit the bullet and set up on our own.

Like anything, though, there are advantages and disadvantages...

We have now traded having a boss and a regular pay cheque for having no one telling us what to do but sometimes not knowing where the next chunk of money is coming from. We accept the stress that brings but we have seriously bad days when someone screws us around... When I worked for others I still had to deal with a**eholes but I didn't take it nearly as personally as I do now!

From my own experience when I worked for others I tended to be low-grade miserable. Now I work for myself I get huge highs and terrifying lows!!

There are days that going back to being a wage-slave and living for the weekend really appeals to me, but I've made my bed and I'm trying to make it as comfortable as possible.

The theory of finding something you like doing and figuring out a way to make a living out of it is sound. Speaking as someone who has done just that I can say it does have it's problems... The main one for me has been enjoying something as a hobby is one thing, having to do it day in, day out to put bread on the table can soon take the shine off something you USED to think of as fun!(many, many moons ago!)

We are all wired differently. Some people need security and see that as fulfilling in itself. For others the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...

In my mind those who are happy with the status quo are lucky but, if it wasn't for people saying "ok isn't good enough" I guess the human race would still be sitting round the campfire of caves saying "this is ok, be grateful for what we've got!"

This is the best definition of work have come across that I read once in a while to humble myself and remind me that there is more to work in the bigger scheme of things, is from some guy who's big in the atheist world which I am not, but still rings very true
"Death is hard to keep in mind when there is work to be done...
Our work will atleast have distracted us,
it would have provided a perfect bubble in which to invest our hopes for perfection,
it will have focussed our goals, it will have given us a sense of mastery,
it will have made us respectably tired, it will have put food on the table.
It will have kept us out of greater trouble."
