How is your Submariner Upgraditis?

So I have been researching the Rolex Submariner for a while and keep seeing small changes happening every now and then and I'm wondering how many people are tempted by these changes.

For example, after 1998, Rolex introduced Luminova, after 2000, solid end links, after 2000-something the engraved rehaut, then maxi dials on the LV, and now the ceramic/glidelock,etc.

If you have the 1996 version, do you feel any urge to upgrade? Do things like hollow end links or tritium yellowing bother you? Just using these as examples.

I'm just curious how many people like the changes and would rather opt for newer and newer versions, and how many people are content or prefer the older models.

Well speaking for myself the real only important upgrade to the 16610 since its introduction in 1988/9 is the SEL.All the others are just purely cosmetic and lume glow on any watch is far down the list in priorities for me.Perhaps the new clasp over the next few decades might show a improvement over the older type, but saying that, the old type was perfectly functional, and so was the bezel. Myself cannot see why all the fuss is over a slither of IMHO very overpriced ceramic insert,so apart from the clasp a bit of ceramic IMO the only upgrade is the price.

I just love a patina on the watch, but that´s me!

I think the biggest changed is going from matt dials to WG dials.
The 16800 with matt dial is so more fun to look at then a WG dial.
But the changed the dial around 84, so the robed my of a matt 16800 birthday watch….

The maxi dial on the LV was one of the determining factors on why i finally got the LV.

As far as Subs, Explorers and GMT:s are concerned I don't care for post five digit models at all. DJ and DD still good looking though, we'll have to wait and see what the possibly upcoming SS Daytona will look like.

Well I like the newer versions over the old, but I kept the old also, so it's all good

I don't really care about these small changes. To me, I buy a Sub for what it is and if ever I have the money years later for a new Sub with any of the latest changes, I go ahead and buy it. I don't lose sleep on a new rehaut or a new SEL or whatever. It's only a watch.

I like the Sub I have, and the more I wear it the less I'd like new.

i recently bought the TT SubC, and it would bother me, if they change it very soon... i think they should not make changes so often... it is somehow not really fair to the people who already bought it... it's not a fashion watch after all..

Well if it goes the same way as the 16610 range you will have nothing to worry about for 30 years. The only changes to the 16610 sub since 1988/9 are hardly worth a mention we had a lume change from Tritium to Luminover, SEL bracelet,LEC crystal and a few minor Rolex Rolex fonts and thats it.And movement wise its the same movement as in 1988/9 the cal 3135, except now its got the in-house escapements parts in the Subc.
