We are a strange lot aren't we? We choose a piece of three hundred year old technology when, for one percent of the price, we could have a modern instrument which is much more accurate and precise and needs no maintenance. If we liked to up the price to, say, ten percent then we could not only have the better performance but (arguably) something which looked as good and has lots more functions too.
So why do we do it? I suspect that there are different answers for different people even if, as in my case, it is not so easy to define - nostalgia, just because it's mechanical? I really am not sure, but logic doesn' come into it! I do find, however, that this syndrome spills over into other aspects of my life: I am an aviation enthusiast and can get quite excited about the sight and sound of a Messerschmitt 109, Spitfire or P51 Mustang whereas a Eurofighter or F16 leaves me pretty much unmoved even though they are they infinitely more advanced and competent - maybe the answer is having soul.
