GMT-Master as a compass

Have you already tried to use the GMT-Master (not the GMT-Master II) as a compass ?

12 hour hand facing the sun, 24 hour hand indicating the north (in the northern hemisphere, out of the DST part of the year).

Is it quite accurate ?

Welcome!

I have tried it before and it's one of those features that not everyone knows about but can become pretty handy. I love it!!!

The best part is that it is pretty accurate!

It doesn't have to be the GMT Master, you can use any analog watch as a rough compass!

How do you point North without a 24H GMT hand?

You estimate half the distance between the hour hand and the 12:00 marker (which is where the GMT hand would be).

The line between the hour hand (facing the sun) and the 12 o'clock position is pointing South if you are in the Northern Hemisphere, North if you are in the Southern Hemisphere ?

Is that it ?

I love this forum !

Is there a visual or diagram to show that?

This is one of the reasons my Expy 2 is my backcountry watch. It's good to always have a makeshift compass.

Quoting from the article (it's all the way at the bottom):
Quote:
Method 1: laid horizontally, the dial will head North if the 24 hour hand is pointed towards the sun

Method 2: if the 12 hour hand is pointed at the sun, the 24 hour hand will point North
For all practical purposes, I find that Method 1 is usually much simpler to use, and has the added benefit of leaving your feet pointing northward.

Also, you can determine sunrise/sunset in your location using any analog watch set to the correct time.

Pretty simple. While wearing the watch normally, aim the face of the watch at the sun. Between sunrise and sunset you will be able to see the face and/or bezel of the watch. Between sunset and sunrise, you'll only see the bracelet and clasp.

Foolproof.
