I believe a very small batch of 1665's in the late 70's had reddish 24hr hands. Not indicative of the 1665 though and more of an oddity than anything else.

As for orange and its selection by Rolex, there is no definitive answer IMHO. Orange has long been related to safety design rules and I'm guessing this is the case with the 1665 and new ExpII.
