I have been reading a lot about pens and thought that I should see what all the fuss was about. I have to preface this with something first. I have no knowledge whatsoever about pens and what makes them good, bad or otherwise.
So I get into work today to see the package on my desk.

I open it with excitment and anticipation.

A Mont Black Starwalker Fountain!!!

I am completely and utterly let down by its complete lack of substance and weight. I can see that it is well made, but if someone just handed it to me, there is nothing to set it apart from other pens with the exception of the fountain.

Can someone explain to me what I am missing? I want to love it, but the more I look at it and hold, the more let down I am.

I am so sorry if I sound like a total rube, but I an have no knowledge base at this point. I do have the option of returning it, but I am giving it a chance to grow on me. Any words of encouragment or education would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking and teaching.

Well I'm not an expert in pens whatsoever and, to be honest, a pen is a pen so it doesn't really matter if it's a Montblanc or a Bic to me. However, since I was very young I always liked to admire my grandfather's MB pens (he would show them to me every once in a while) and recently he gave me his Montblanc Hommage à Frédéric Chopin. I must say I don't use it as much as one would but I really enjoy looking at it and give it a little try on a piece of paper from times to times. I can clearly see, just like you, how well made they are and to be honest (with all due respect to those who like technical features and anything that would make a MB better than a regular pen) I like to see those as "jewel pens": I think they're amazingly nice and I'd love to buy myself a couple more of them and perhaps have my little collection.

If you don't see how better it is compared to a regular pen, maybe you'd like to see it as a way to spoil yourself and just tell you you have a very nice looking pen to work with. It's pretty much like owning a Rolex: you know it looks nice, you know it's very well made and you like to take a look at it just for the sake of it but, in the end, a Timex would probably do the same job wouldn't it?

P.S.: Please don't hate me I love both Rolex watches and Montblanc pens and I think this might be a way of cheering the OP up! Of course if you really can't enjoy it or like it you should return it but I wouldn't...it's a very good looking pen!

You should return it and get a Pelikan. :) seriously, feelingtheblues hit it on the head. A cheapo bic works just as well. Try writing with it for a bit, if you don't like it, take it back and buy something else nice for yourself. Good luck.

Darren, have you used it yet? The ink has a different feeling flowing from a fountain pen over using a rollerball or ballpoint pen. You use a light touch(do not press like you would with a RB or BP)and the ink just flows from the nib. If the pen you have is not to your liking try out a different MontBlanc fountain pen or one of the many other fine brands!!!

First is why did you buy this one?
What's the reasoning behind the purchase and was it based on cost consideration?
I would return it, and attend a penshow nearby.

Return it. Go to the MB boutique. Try out different nibs to see which one suits you the best. Then choose the model you would like. always choose the nib first.

Good idea, each boutique store has a set of sample pens with all the different size nibs available to use and check out.....

Hmmm... if this is the first MB pen you have held in your hands, I would suggest going to a pen store and try writting with a few fountains. Most MB pens are made of resin so they are all very light weight, except a few models. I had a starwalker rubber/platinum fountain, and that was heavier and very balanced. Maybe you should try that one to see if you fancy it better. My all time favorite and most used foutain pen is the MB Bohem, and I have owned most MB models. In the end you really need to try a few to see which you will like more.
