Eye opening results

Just had a search through ebay listings for ROLEX. ( a 79year old man with nothing better to do) Results were eye opening.
There were 3,523 items listed of which 796 were new watches and 2,693 were used watches The highest priced was a used president at $99,999,99.
--or-£63,215 So questions for forum members--Why are so many Rolex watches being sold on by their owners ? and who with $100,000 to spend on a watch would be looking on ebay?.I look forward to reading the replies.

Rolex manufactures almost 700.000 watches every year. It's inevitable that some of the owners will eventually want to give up their watches.

Just because someone is asking $99,999 for a watch on ebay doesn't mean they will actually get a buyer.

People from all economic classes shop on Ebay from those looking to buy a $2 items to those buying Luxury goods. The reason someone with $100,000 to spend on a watch is looking on ebay is because it is a huge marketplace where you never know what you will find. The biggest difference to me would be that a person with lots of money would use ebay as a resource to locate items, then travel to the item location and purchase it in person no matter the distance.

Also, we all know no matter the persons tax bracket the thrill of the hunt is part of the enjoyment and ebay makes it simple to look at multiple options all over the world... My

I check out e-bay just to see what`s out there.I even found a local Rolex once and when I met the seller he turned out to be lacking in truthfull information in general and in particular about the watch I was looking at,needless to say no deal was made.

Because it's a great venue to both buy and sell.

I've bought $1 items and sold $100,000 items (not the same of course).

I too have seen this on eBay and would say that there are a few things we can take from it - Some good and some not so good.

I've only got into this recently having just bought a Rolex for myself but leading upto my purchase (on eBay infact) I have learned a lot on how to spot a fake.
Armed with this new knowledge, even as a novice, I am still stumbling across dubious listings every day and a few are so obvious I have of course reported them.
I'm not saying that everything on there is a scam, but there are certainly too many there to be called only a small concern.

The larger part of the trade seems to be through watch dealers and traders just putting their stock on. If they are legit then I guess they would be the best to look at for a genuine product, especially as they will often have very strong feedback and often more likely to include papers and more detailed information on the watch they are sellings.
Of course they also carry the highest prices and really you don't look on eBay for this - You go there to try and get a "deal" on something.

Leading to private sellers; they can have many reasons for sale - They could be wanting to sell for many reasons though at present the two main ones seem either to fund the purchase of another watch (Rolex or otherwise) or to simply cash it in due to needs in their current financial situation.

All fairly obvious stuff but certainly worth bringing to the discussion.

70%+ of those sales are watches being sold by grey dealers who list the same watch for weeks and months on end. Ebay was fun when it was actual people using it rather than a bunch of front pages for pawn shops.

There is ALOT of junk on eBay. The nice pieces rarely sell for what I would consider a 'deal' or sometimes even 'fair'. Like Timber L stated, eBay was excellent in its early years.....I used it weekly to buy/sell darn near everything. My wife laughed when I started buying underwear (new-factory seconds) on eBay.

Ebay is the number 1 on-line market place so it's inevitable that people
will want to sell thier watches on there.

Ebay is the largest market in the world. I find it surprising that someone might think there would be no Rolexes there.

Like all things in life, some view a Rolex as a commodity while others view it as a collectors item, etc.

The fact the eBay has quiet a few listings of Rolexes is really a testament to how valuable the watch is from both the sellers point of view as well as the buyers. That's why it is listed on the world largest auction site.

You don't see used facial tissues (for example purposes only) on eBay because there us no perceived value in it.

So True.

Same Dealer list 5 of the same watch. These idiots are over-saturating and drowning out independent folks. Oh well, Next watch I sell will be on TRF.

my friends father bought a $120,000 Porsche and sold it on Ebay in one day, he felt the car was too sporty for him.

Try Ebay US 21,600 plus items, most expensive this one at $430K
I've bought and sold a few Rolex on Ebay -quick sales- good prices on both sides of the transactions.
